Skimming
Skimming
Skimming, in my opinion, is when I read something quickly just to understand what it is about. I don’t read every single word. Instead, I focus on the titles, subtitles, and some important sentences to get the main idea.
I usually use skimming when the text is long and I don’t have much time. It helps me know if the text is important or if I need to read it more carefully later.
It helps me save time.
I can understand the general topic fast.
Help to prepares me before reading in detail.
Disadvantages:
I might miss important details.
I don’t fully understand everything.

EXAMPLES:
1. When I receive a long article
2. when my teacher gives us a reading before an exam
3. When I’m in a bookstore and I want to choose a book.
4. When I read information on a website.
5. When I have limited time in an exam
I think scanning is when I read a text only to find specific information. I am not interested in the whole text, just in something concrete like a date, a name, or a number.
When I scan, my eyes move quickly until I find exactly what I am looking for.

Advantages:
It helps me find answers very fast.
It is useful during tests.
I don’t waste time reading unnecessary information.
Disadvantages:
I don’t understand the complete text.
I might ignore important context.
EXAMPLES:
1. When I take an exam and I need to find a specific answer in a reading,
2. When I look for a date in a history book
3. If I need to find a phone number or an address,
4. When I use the dictionary
5. Sometimes when my teacher asks a specific question.
Getting the Gist
Getting the Gist means understanding the main idea of a paragraph or text and explaining it in a short and simple way. It is like summarizing the most important information in one or two sentences.
This technique helps us focus only on the essential ideas and not on small details.
Advantages:
It improves comprehension.
It helps us remember important information.
It develops summarizing skills.
Disadvantages:
It can be difficult with complex texts.
Sometimes we may leave out important information.
EXAMPLES:
1. After I read a paragraph, I stop for a moment and ask myself, “What is the most important idea here?
2. When my teacher asks, “What is this text about?”
3. If I read a long article
4. When I study for an exam.
PREDICTING
For me, predicting is when I use what I already know to make an idea about what the text will say next.

Advantages:
It makes reading more interesting.
It keeps me focused.
It connects my previous knowledge with the new text.
Disadvantages:
Sometimes my predictions are wrong.
I can feel confused if the story changes direction.
EXAMPLES
1. Before I start reading a story
2. When I’m reading a novel and something dramatic happens.
3. If a character in the story makes a bad decision.
4. When I read the first paragraph of an article.
5. Sometimes during class, after reading half of a story.
6. If I see keywords like “problem” or “conflict,”.
UNDERSTANDIG VOCABULARY: MEANING FROM CONTEXT
This is when we look up the meaning of unfamiliar words to create clues about what the text is trying to convey, thus improving comprehension and reading fluency.

The main advantages and disadvantages
Advantages:
* Enhances reading fluency
* Improves vocabulary
* Builds the ability to learn new words naturally through reading
* Supports comprehension
* Reduces interruptions caused by the need to look up unfamiliar words
* Encourages readers to think critically and engage with the text.

Disadvantages
* If the reader is not exposed to a high volume of reading or language, learning is slow.
* Lack of technical precision
* Risk of misinterpretation
The Clue: The "cause" is the witness's behavior; the "effect" is the police getting frustrated and suspecting a cover-up.
The Meaning: Evasive means avoiding giving a direct answer; cagey.
Example:
When the boss announced the surprise bonuses, the office was filled with euphoria; people were high-fiving, cheering, and dancing by their desks
The Clue: The triggers (bonuses) and the reactions (cheering, dancing, high-fiving) suggest an intense positive emotion.
The Meaning: Euphoria means a state of intense happiness or excitement.
2 examples of where to apply each technique.
