The True Story of Yasmin is a story about Acceptance and Inclusion created collaborativelly by transnational students who work in teams to present the story from their own point of view

Primary School of Kato Tritos
In 2022 we had the chance to visit a School in Lahti Finland. The school promoted inclusion and sustainability. There we met a lot of pupils from different countries that came as immigrants. In one of the classes there was a girl called Yasmin.

We introduced ourselves and she was surprised to hear that we come from Lesvos island. That is the island she come with her family one dawn ,trying to escape from war ,trying to survive.
'I know your place', she whispered.

She told us how she arrived tired and afraid, holding her mother’s hand after escaping war. When they saw the island from the boat, her mother cried.
She felt happy and safe at last.
As they were approaching the coast, Yasmin felt relieved, but also worried about the future. Who would they meet? Were the people here friendly?
A voice from the coast interrupted her thoughts: "Hello there! Don't worry. We are here to help. You are safe now".

With the help of locals, she enrolled in school and began her new life as a student.
The classroom was bright and welcoming, with large windows, wooden desks, and colorful drawings about nature and equality on the walls. Plants were in the corners and different languages were written on posters, honoring each child’s story.

Yasmin stood at the door, feeling nervous, shy, and anxious. Her hands trembled slightly. Would she be accepted? Her teacher smiled softly and invited her inside. A girl approached her chair and whispered hello. Slowly, Yasmin felt hope replace fear.

Some other girls drew a colourful picture of the sun, the sea and some flowers and wrote “Welcome Yasmin!” on it. They gave it to her and she asked:
- "for me?" full of surprise and happiness.
During the break the whole class played together in the yard and showed her around the school.
Yasmin’s fear was now slowly disappearing. She felt warm inside, like she had found new friends and a safe place, at last...

In the next few days at school, Yasmin felt better. She smiled more and started to feel comfortable. However, some things were still difficult. During the lessons, she couldn’t understand all the words because the language was new to her. One day, her teacher asked her a question, but Yasmin felt nervous and stayed silent. Some students looked at her, and she felt embarrassed again. She wanted to answer, but she didn’t know how. She hoped someone could help her understand and speak in class.

During the break, she was very sad and felt lonely. She thought about her school, her friends, and the beautiful times she had with her family back home. She tried to find a way to go back, but that was just a dream. Nearby, some children were playing and noticed her sitting sadly on a bench in the schoolyard.

“Look, Emine, this little girl is sitting alone on the bench and she is very upset,” Mustafa said.
“You are right! She reminds me of us when we first came to this school,” Emine said.
“Let’s go talk to her,” Mustafa said.
