A New Opportunity
Sometimes at school, we get the chance to try something new.
Trying something new can feel exciting.
It can also feel a little scary.
Our school is having a Talent Show.
Students can sing, dance, tell jokes, or play an instrument.
I have never been in a talent show before.
My teacher gives us a flyer about the Talent Show.mShe says anyone can try out.I like to sing at home, but I have never sung in front of a crowd.
Big Feelings
When I hear about it, my stomach feels funny.
I might think:
What if I’m not good at it?
What if I make a mistake?
What if other kids are better than me?
These feelings are normal.
When I think about trying out, my stomach feels funny.
I think:, What if I forget the words? What if I mess up? What if people laugh at me?
Everyone Feels This Way
Most kids feel nervous when they try something new.
Even grown-ups feel nervous sometimes.
Feeling nervous does not mean I can’t do it.
Some of my classmates say they feel nervous too. Even kids who have done it before feel a little scared. Feeling nervous is normal when I try something new.
Mistakes Help Me Learn
When I try something new, I might not be perfect.
That is okay.
Mistakes help my brain grow.
Each time I practice, I get a little better.
At practice, I miss a few notes.
That’s okay.
Each time I practice, I get better.
Mistakes help me improve.
I Can Be Brave
Being brave does not mean I am not scared.
Being brave means I try even when I feel nervous.
I can take a deep breath.
I can say to myself, “I can try.”
Being brave means I try, even when I feel nervous.
I take a deep breath.
I tell myself, “I can do this.”
I Am Not Alone
My teacher is there to help me.
My classmates are learning too.
We can encourage each other.
We can say, “You’ve got this!”
My teacher helps me practice.
My family cheers for me at home.
My friends say, “You’ll be great!”
Good Things Can Happen
When I try something new, I might:
Discover something I really like
Make a new friend
Learn a new skill
Feel proud of myself
Trying helps me grow.
If I try out, I might: Feel proud of myself, Learn something new, Have fun, or Inspire someone else to be brave
If It Feels Hard..
If it feels hard, I can:
Ask for help
Take a short break
Try again
Remember that learning takes time
I do not have to quit right away.
If I feel nervous on stage, I can: Take a slow breath, Look at a friendly face, Keep going, and Remember I practiced
