The sea was grey, and gloomy. Anya stood at the edge of the steamboat, inspecting the water beyond her while the boat was approaching something large. A tall, copper woman stood in the distance and the crowd of people on the boat went silent.
"I'ts beautiful." Anya whispered to herself.

As the ship arrived in the New York City harbor, Anya heard people sighing and preparing to take their first steps in America, hearing people say things in their own language, but she had a feeling that they were talking about the same thing she was thinking.
"This is America." Anya said taking a long breath.

Anya followed the crowd closely, hoping they knew where to go. She knew she was in the right place when she saw a giant waiting room with hundreds of people talking to officers.
"You're up." a man said pointing to Anya
"State your name and place of origin." He said assertively.
"Anya Fischer, Hamburg Germany." She said nervously.
Her hands shook as she handed the man her information.

Then she was sent to get a health inspection, ensuring she didn't have any diseases. Anya was sweating and nervous as she walked towards the man. He checked her eyes and any other areas that may showcase sickness. Luckily, she wasn't sick and didn't have any signs.
"Are you expecting to meet someone? You can't leave here unless someone is picking you up." The doctor stated
"My brother, Felix Fischer" She said as she handed him a letter her brother sent her.
"You're free to go then, good luck." the man said.

So, Anya took her things and made her way down the steps to America for the first time. She then found her brother standing by an old wagon looking around for her. Once they saw each other, they hugged, said hello, and were now on their way to Felix's house. As they walked, Anya looked up at the giant buildings around her.
"This isn't what I expected." Anya said in awe.

After making it to the building, Anya realized how dingy, Dirty, and crowded it was. Felix discussed rent and proposed the idea Anya should work at a garment-making factory since she taught herself how to sew in Germany. Anya needed to start looking for jobs soon.

Anya made her way to the garment factory hoping she could get a job. It worked in her favor since most workers had gone on strike and lost their jobs. She got the job and soon realized the terrible conditions and bad pay. She heard her coworkers discussing the strike most of the other girls went on last week and finally learned the concept. Will Anya choose to stay at work or will she go on strike and make a change?

It has been 10 years since Anya got that job at the factory. She is now used to the chaotic nature of New York. She is now 26, working, and brought her parents from Germany to live with them with the help of her brother.

Even though Anya got her family to New York, the work and its conditions have gotten worse. There were higher taxes and worse pay. Even though they were a family of four, Anya's family was barely making ends meet, but Anya knew she could do more...
Anya thought about things, and discussed with her coworker Camile about what they should do and Camile brought up the craziest idea.
"We should join a labor union." She said.
