There was once a princess who lived in her castle. Her name was Vanessa. Despite being a princess, Vanessa still had to go to school to learn just like every other child. 

One day after class, Vanessa's teacher pulled her aside. 

Vanessa, I've noticed you have been struggling with your reading work. Do you need extra help in class?

Vanessa was shocked. How could she, a princess, possibly need help with reading? Despite her teacher's protests, Vanessa shook her head "no" when she asked if she wanted help.

After her conversation with her teacher, Vanessa wandered outside. Once she thought about it for a while, Vanessa promised herself that she would get better at reading all on her own. She wouldn't need anyone's help! She was a princess, after all. 

Back at her castle, Vanessa kept trying to read by herself. But all the letters swam before her eyes and they didn't make any sense!

I'm just not getting it! 

Vanessa tried for hours and hours, but nothing was helping. She was a princess, for goodness sake! She should be able to read on her own. 

Crying, Vanessa ran outside. "I'm never going to learn how to read!" she thought to herself.

A little owl saw her tears through the trees. 

Why are you crying?

Vanessa sniffled and turned towards the owl, who was looking at her with curious eyes. 

My teacher says I am having a hard time with reading. I'm trying to teach myself, but I'm not getting any better!

The owl quietly considered this for a long moment. He didn't like to see the princess so upset. Thankfully, he was a wise old owl and knew exactly what to ask her. 

Did you try asking for help?
