A nine-year-old girl named Hannah lived in a small and loving home with caring parents. Her family was poor, yet she experienced love and safety. She worked hard in school and earned good grades.
One day, a question entered her mind and wouldn't go away.
"Who am I?" she wondered.
First, Hannah asked her teacher.
"You're a girl. You're nine. Your parents made you who you are," the teacher replied. Hannah wanted a deeper answer. She felt discouraged. If my teachers don't know...how will I ever find out?
Next, she asked her friends at school. They stared at her in complete silence. Hannah felt sad and wondered if her friends truly understood her. She learned having many friends didn't always mean feeling understood and loved. What mattered was the quality of friendships, not the quantity.
Hannah decided she would ask her parents after school. The sky was gray and heavy with clouds. When she got home, she received terrible news.
Her parents were taken by robbers on their way to work... and they didn't survive. Hannah sobbed and held her mother's homemade blanket close to her chest. The warmth of the light made her feel safe.
Hannah grieved quietly in her parents' room. She tried to ignore her sadness, thinking it was weak to feel so many emotions, but the pains remained with her. Even so, it made her wonder who she truly was without her parents.
Then, Hannah moved to a caring orphanage. The nannies were kind, and she quickly made new friends. She kept asking others her big question, but no one had an answer. After many rejections and confused looks, Hannah made a promise to herself: "I will never stop searching."
One sunny day, wonderful news arrived. A family wanted to adopt her! Hannah felt nervous and excited all at once. She agreed right away. Her new family welcomed her with warm smiles and gentle hugs.
