Right before 1812 Jill heard that US citizens were being kidnapped off of US ships by Great Britain onto
their ships. One of Jill's neighbors were one of the
people who were kidnapped. Jill was best friends with
her neighbor and she misses him a lot. She tried to
look for him, but she had no luck finding him, so Jill was
very sad. She felt like her country's honor was
at stake and the relationships with Britain were
worsening.

Jim! Where are you?2
In the early days of the war, the US was not prepared. Jill was worried because they had 16 warships and 7,000 men in the army, compared to Britain this is very small. The British
put a blockade on the US ports. This prevented supplies from entering the US. Jill was
scared because she didn't know when supplies would be imported. So she went to the
ports to see what was happening. Someone from the ports saw her and asked her what
she was up to. She told them she wanted to see the blockade and find out when
they would be able to receive supplies.

In July of 1812, Jill heard that the Americans invaded Canada, and that they soon realized they would have to retreat because they didn't have
enough soldiers. Jill worried that the British-Canadian army would take
advantage of this and surround the US soldiers on the way back, and
they did. The British captured over 2,000 Americans. Jill became very
nervous because she knew this was a big set back for her county. She
later heard from a man in town that during the battle on Lake Erie the
US had better luck. Americans took control of the lake and the
British went back to Canada. After Jill found out about their victory she
became very happy. Her faith was restored in America.

Did you hear.....4

In August 1812 Jill read that the British marched into the city and burned down the White House and several government buildings.
After that the British moved to Baltimore and they wanted
to attack Fort McHenry. British warships bombarded the fort on the
night of September 13. Jill later found out Francis Scott Key watched
the attack and he wrote a poem on what he saw. In 1931 Congress
made it the national anthem. Jill loved the song very much! On
Christmas Eve in 1814 the Treaty of Ghent was signed and ended
the war. The news came to America a few weeks later and Jill was
exuberant when she found this out! In 1815 under General Andrew Jackson,
America won over the British. Jill was very excited that her
country was finally out of war and they won.

I love America!
