Long before Eurpoeans came to Texas, American Indian groups lived across the land. Each group devleoped its own way of life based on the environment around them.

The land in Texas is not the same everywhere,

some areas have forests, while others have plains, coasts or deserts.

These differences affected how people lived.

The Caddo lived in the forests of East Texas, where there was plenty of rain and fertile soil.

Because of this, the Caddo were skilled farmers.

They grew crops like corn, beans, and squash and lived in sturdy homes made from wood and grass.

The Karankawa lived along the Gulf Coast, where water and sea life were easy to find.    

They depended on fishing and used canoes to travel.

Unlike the Caddo, they did not farm as much because their food came from the water.
