WHY IS THE GROUND SHAKING?!

It seems were having an earthquake.

An earthquake..? What's that??

Well, you see...

An earthquake is the sudden shaking of the ground caused by giant puzzle pieces under the Earth's surface, called tectonic plates, bumping, sliding, or crashing into each other.

Earthquakes travel in two main types of waves: Primary and secondary waves. Primary waves, also known as p-waves, are fastest and arrive first. It can move through both solids and liquids. Secondary waves, also known as s-waves, are slower and only move through solids.

During an earthquake, built-up stress in the Earth's crust is suddenly released, causing intense ground shaking, seismic waves, and potential surface rupture.

All earthquakes originate at the focus (also called the hypocenter), which is the exact spot deep underground where rocks first break and release energy. And right above the focus is the epicenter. It differs from the focus because it's located on top of the ground.
