This book is dedicated to my future students,
who I hope to remind to always see the world
with curiosity, imagination, and wonder.

On an oddly quiet street, where many houses looked identical, the sky seemed to stretch wide, and gray above the neighborhood. The houses sat side by side in a row, with trees standing still, as if they were too tired to sway.
Most of the neighbors never paid attention to the sky, and they often rushed home without ever looking up above, focusing only on where they were going. But Lila would never stop noticing the sky. She would often stop, and stare, wondering why the it felt so quiet.
Lila never felt that the sky was empty. To her, she felt it was waiting, as if there was a story that had not yet been told. The clouds drifted slower than usual, almost as if they were whispering secrets to one another.
"Maybe the sky is hiding something", Lila said. The other kids never understood. They only saw the dark, gray clouds. Lila imagined the colors beyond what the others could see. To her, she knew the sky was full of possibilities.
On the long walk home from school, the other children walked home talking and giggling. Lila however, stopped, and tilted her head back looking up to the sky. "It's like a large, blank canvas" she whispered.
The sky seemed to stretch far and wide, going on forever, while she waited patiently. A soft breeze quickly brushed her face as if a gentle hand was encouraging her to continue looking.
One afternoon, Lila stepped outside of her home holding a small, brown paintbrush. The air felt still, as if the world was forever holding its breath.
Even the clouds seemed to take a long pause above her. She lifted her brush up high, towards the sky, as her heart began to beat faster. In her mind, she could already see the colors begin to swirl together as if they were suddenly waking up again.
At first, the change seemed to be soft and quiet. The clouds were pink and pale, stretching far across the sky appearing to be like cotton candy.
Golden light flowed through the cracks of the clouds like warm honey, glowing beautifully over the street. The gray was quickly replaced by colors that blended well together and moved through the sky. The sky was no longer empty in Lila's eyes, yet it shimmered and shifted as if it was coming alive.
Soon, the colors in the sky started growing brighter and bolder. Deep blue colors spread far across the sky, while light purples were happily dancing between the clouds. Several streaks of orange alsoo flickered as if they were tiny flames. The sky looked similar to a moving painting swirling with every color that Lila could imagine. It was no longer quiet, it felt alive, and like a dream that only she could have dreamed.
