Bob likes to explore places. Today he decided to explore a volcanoand it made him wonder where it came from. He learned that there
are tectonic plates on the outside of the Earth and when they move
apart, magma comes through to make a volcano!
2

Bob was still curious about the inside of the volcano so he went up to take a look. What he saw was a lot of magma and some igneous rocks, which are made by
when it cools! Sometimes the pressure and heat from the magma and the volcano
can make metamorphic rocks instead.
3

Bob fell right down the volcano into the mantle! It is a layer of the Earth that is madeof molten rocks and is very thick and hot. Bob noticed that energy was always
moving through the mantle and shifting the crust above it. He realized that this was
what moved the plates earlier to make the volcano he saw!
4

Bob floated down through the mantle and right into the next liquid layer, theouter core! He saw that this layer is mostly nickel and iron that is so hot that it
is liquid. But Bob also knew that this was not the last layer so he kept going
deeper!
5

Boom! Bob went right into something big and hard! He made it to the inner core, the very center of the Earth. Because of all the pressure, the core is solid iron and nickel so Bob can't get through! He decides
that he has seen enough stuff for now and decides to start heading back to the top.
6

On his way out Bob found a spaceship and used it toget out faster. On his way out he passed by the crust,
the outermost layer of the Earth. The crust is the
thinnest layer and is hard and rocky.
7

Bob's spaceship took him a little too far. But seeing the Earth from up on the moon got him thinking about how Continental Drift
made the land look the way it looks today. Continental Drift is the
idea that the continents used to all be together, but then they
slowly drifted apart.
8

That kind of makes sense, because there is all kinds of evidence. There are some of the same fossils on certain different continents. Not only
that but some of the continents fit together like a puzzle! It all makes sense!
Bob sat there on the moon and thought aboutit for awhile.
9

Bob made it back to Earth and thought his adventure was over. But then, he found another type of rock called a sedimentary rock. The sedimentary rock was made by
different kinds of sediments being stuck together and hardening.
10

But that story will have to waitfor another time! Come back for
more adventure with Bob!
