The sun was beaming through the clouds. It
was the beginning of September. As I drove up
to the Wooden Shoe Motel, I noticed how
dirty it was. There were doors with chipped
red paint. Glass bottles, wrinkled paper, and
plastic Meijer bags were laying on the ground.

I turned my wheel sharply as I parked in the
back of the building. My pastor, Britton, told
me to walk through the back into the 'Smoke
Room'.

As I approached the building, I reached out my
hand to the metal handle. I gave it a push as
smoke-filled air fanned my face. I see Britton
praying for an older man. After Britton finishes
praying, a tear falls from the older man's face.

I looked over at a table to my
left. There was a table with
chili and hot chocolate. People
who lived at the Wooden Shoe
Motel were eager to eat. I
soon figured out these people
lived in poverty. They did not
have enough money to afford
food.

As people walked in, they would not make eye
contact with me. It seemed they felt ashamed
to be living in poverty.

Then two girls, Sara and Eliza, came into the
tunnel of smoke. They were giggling. Their
smile was from ear to ear. Her smile was
memorable.

For a few months I went to the motel every
Friday. I began to learn about these little girls.
We always played Dora. Eliza was boots. Sara
was Swiper. I was Dora.

I soon learned their Mom does not enjoy
spending time with them. They tell me she
kicks them out of her room. When she gets
angry, they have to leave.

The darkness could not stay when we started
playing music. The sweet sound of guitar and
melodious voices filled the air. The words:
grace, freedom, surrender, and love moved in
hearts.

Our hope is that these little girls will find love,
freedom, and surrender. Each week we go
back and teach them more about the love we
have found. We teach them that they are
loved no matter their circumstances.

Darkness is always present behind red doors.
But I have to believe that God empowers two
little girls to bring light.
