What are renewable resources?
A renewable resource is any natural resource that
can replenish itself naturally over time.
We can use renewable resources for energy.
They are not toxic to us or our environment.

There are six main types of Renewable
Resources:
Solar Energy
Wind Energy
Geothermal Energy
Biomass Energy
Hydroelectric Energy
Ocean Energy
Let's explore each of these!

Solar Energy
The Sun's rays that reach earth have a lot of potential
energy that can be trapped. Solar panels capture this
energy by converting the sun's rays into heat and
electricity. We can then use this electricity to heat our
homes, turn on the lights, and more!

Wind Energy
We feel the wind every day. Sometimes it blows softly,
and other times very fast. The wind's energy is
captured with wind turbines. The wind moves the
turbines around and around, which powers a generator
below. This then goes to a transformer to create
electricity.

Geothermal Energy
Geothermal Energy uses the heat from the Earth. This
is a very clean and sustainable resource. Geothermal
energy resources can come from the ground, hot water
(think of a hot spring), hot rock below Earth’s surface,
to magma even deeper below the surface. Water and air
can be cooled and/or heated by using pipes below our
buildings to access the cold or hot temperature of the
ground below us (heat in winter, cold in summer).
Wells can be drilled into underground reservoirs of hot
water to generate electricity by using the steam from
the hot water to power a turbine/generator.
