This week we are working on a science
unit that has to do with Earth's
systems, structures, and processes.
Today, we learned about how light
travels. We learned that light travels
from the sun to the earth. Some of
this light is reflected back into space
and some of the light is absorbed by
the land, water, and air. To conclude,
we learned that light is always
traveling.

We also learned all about wind. We learned
how to determine the direction of the wind and
the speed of the wind. You can determine the
direction of the wind by looking at a wind
socket or vane. We described the direction of
the wind by using cardinal directions, which
means North, South, East, or West. We can
determine the speed of the wind by using an
anemometer. Now we know how to determine
the direction and speed of wind.

Another thing that we learned about
was weather patterns. We learned
that weather patterns are influenced by
the time of day and the time of year.
During the day, it is normally cooler
in the mornings and warmer in the
afternoons. The weather changes
throughout each season. There are four
seasons; summer, fall, winter, and
spring. During summer it is hot, in
fall it starts cooling down, winter it
is very cold, and spring is when it
starts warming back up. In
conclusion, we learned that the
weather changes depending on the time
of day and the time of the year.

The last topic that we learned about in our Earth
unit in science was about the different instruments
that weathermen use to predict, collect, and
analyze data. They use both electronic and manuel
instruments, sensors, and computers. They can
use these instruments to produce a running record
of weather changes that occur over time. By using
this data that they collect, they can then begin to
predict weather trends. Now we know how
weathermen can collect, analyze, and predict
weather by using different instruments.
