In just a blink of an eye, Emily’s life turned upside down. Emily is a twelve year old girl, who
is always happy and joyful. Except for the last three months, she has been tired and feeling ill a
lot. One day, her mom Kathy, took her to the doctors for a regular checkup. They tested her
blood sugar and it was over four hundred. This had explained why Emily had felt sick and tired
all the time. The doctor told Kathy something that shocked us all. “Kathy, you need to take Emily
to the hospital right away. She could be a diabetic.”
As soon as Emily heard that she had to go to the hospital, she started to cry,“Mommy, I do
not want to go to the hospital. I’m scared.”
Kathy replied, “It’s going to be okay honey, but you need to call daddy and Katelyn.”
Katelyn is Emily’s older sister. Katelyn and Emily were always close, until Emily started to get
sick. She had an attitude with everyone and it was hard for them to get along. “Katelyn,” Emily
said while crying, “You need to call mom right away!”
Frightened, Katelyn replied, “What is going on? Are you and mom okay?””
Just call mom.” Emily said and hung up.

Katelyn knew that something serious was going on if Emily had called her crying. She did
not want to call her mom because she was afraid of what she was going to tell her.

Katelyn was at her friend Megan’s house when she got the phone call from Emily. Megan
saw the fright on Katelyn’s face. “Katelyn what’s wrong? Your face just got really pale and you
look like you're going to cry.”
“I have to call my mom, something ins’t right,” replied Katelyn.
“I am sure everything is okay. Just call her and see what is going on,”Megan insisted. Megan
had always been a good friend to Katelyn. “Whatever happens I am here for you,” Megan quickly
said, before Katelyn called her mom.
Katelyn, feeling scared and nervous, dialed her mom on the phone. It seemed like forever
before Kathy answered the phone.
“Hello?” Kathy answered.
“Mom! What is going on? Is everything okay?” Katelyn said quickly.
“No Katelyn, everything is not okay! I have to take Emily to the hospital, she is really sick.” As
soon as Katelyn heard that her little sister was sick, she started to cry and her face got really
red.
“What? What’s wrong with her?” Katelyn said surprisingly.

Kathy replied to her trying to hold her tears back, “Emily’s blood sugar is four hundred and
the normal range for her age is one hundred and fifteen to one hundred and fifty. I am taking
her to Mott’s Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor. You need to get here now! Bye.” As soon as
Kathy hung the phone up, Katelyn realized that she did not have her car. She was so frantic,
she could not think straight.

Katelyn had all these thoughts running through her mind.
“How am I going to get there? Is my baby sister going to be okay? I
need to call Emily and see if she is okay!”
“Katelyn! What’s going on?” Megan finally said.
“Megan, I need to get to the hospital right now! Emily is sick!”
Katelyn frantically responded.
“My dad is at work, and my mom can’t drive,” Megan explained.
“Alright, then I need to call people and find a ride, but I can’t stay
here tonight.” Katelyn said.

Katelyn must have called five people. Finally, her friend Laurie
answered the phone.
“Hello?” Laurie answered.
“Laurie, Emily is in the hospital and I need a ride there. I will
give you gas money,” said Katelyn.
“Okay send me the address. I am on my way.” Laurie replied.
A half hour later, Laurie showed up at Megan’s house and they
were on our way to the hospital.

Katelyn knew that she was going to break down and cry when
she saw her baby sister in the hospital bed. But she also knew, that
she had to stay strong for her.
Katelyn and Laurie were at the hospital until almost midnight,
when Emily finally fell asleep. So they decided it was time to leave.

The next day, Katelyn went up to the hospital and spent all day there. Emily
was already acting like her old self and she was looking a lot better.
Every time Emily ate, she had to count her carbohydrates and do math to
figure out how much insulin to give herself.
Emily’s nurse came in and told Katelyn that she had to give Emily a shot of
insulin. The thought of having to give pain to her little sister was the worst
thought ever.
Thankfully, Emily took it like a champ!
“Emily, are you okay?” Katelyn asked
Emily replied, “Yes, I’m okay it was just a little pinch. No big deal.”
“Okay, as long as I didn't hurt you!” Katelyn said.
“I’m okay, I promise.” Emily said again.

Everyone that would be with Emily a lot had to learn how to give Emily a shot. Everyone
in Emily’s family were scared to give her the shot, because they didn’t want to hurt her.
“Katelyn,” Emily said while they were alone.
“Yeah Emily,” Katelyn said back.
“Out of everyone that gave me a shot, you hurt me the least. You didn’t make me bleed,”
Emily said quietly.
