To Professor Hayes- While this assignment was challengingand involved a whole lot of searching for words, it was
also pretty fun. Thanks.

In a galaxy far away, there lived an abnormal
robot named Steve. Unlike the other "aluminum
brains", as he liked to call them, Steve wanted to
travel to new terrain. He was tired of soil and an
abundance of rocks. He wanted new air to
breathe, one with less nitrogen. One day, when
Steve was talking with a friend, he noticed planet
earth. Right then he decided he would leave his
geological home and travel through the stars in
interstellar space travel. His ultimate adventure
would take him where no antecedent had gone
before. Normally robots didn't even think about
leaving home, but Steve knew he needed
something different.

So off Steve went. He flew into the atmosphere
and became one with the celestial body. He flew
past Alpha Centauri which was so bright he had
to shield his eyes. He saw every constellation
there was to see and got to experience how
gigantic the solar system is. As Steve
converged toward earth, he began to feel a little
sickness from being completely separate from
home. He had no idea if there would be anything
about earth and home that were similar, or if the
differences would be so grand he wouldn't even be
able to define them. All he knew was that he was
traveling at the speed of light and entry through
the troposphere would hurt if he didn't slow
down!

Steve got closer and closer...he could feel the
altitude dropping and the atmospheric pressure
pushing down on him. But he could finally see land
mass. He would very rapidly be touching down on
earth's surface.

Steve had finally been released from space and
landed firmly onto solid ground. He couldn't speak
for a whole minute, there was so much to observe
in this new environment. He noticed immediately
that the climate was quite different from home. It
was so tropical! He stood next to the shoreline
and visually recorded everything he saw. This
place was active with life and the air was so filled
with oxygen. This planet made his seem so plain,
he thought. With his fine-tuned vision, Steve
could even see the ocean floor!

The ocean contained so much liquid! Steve
decided it was positively beautiful with the simple
current pushing the fish along. Never in his life
had he seen so much H2O. On his planet there
was only small amounts of ground water because
no other organisms existed that needed it. On his
planet, everything seemed so artificial, but here
everything had so much character. Steve was
eager to see what else he could discover in this
nutrient-rich land.

Steve flew from the coast to see if he could make
new discoveries somewhere else on this continent.

After flying consistently for hours, Steve
found what appeared to be the epicenter of
interaction on earth. This location was highly
concentrated with human life. He was
interested in seeing how this cities'
inhabitants interacted with their
surroundings. All he knew for sure was that
the people living here created structures
bigger than any he had seen before.

Steve's thrill with this new city was only
temporary when he saw how mechanical
everything was. This looked to him like a parallel
universe whose entire existence was based on
using and producing energy. Steve could smell the
fuel in the air and sense the pollution all around
him. This place was significantly different than
the environmentally friendly isolated island on
which he had first landed. After only a few hours,
he decided he has spent sufficient time in the
city...he was ready to transport himself
somewhere new.

Steve flew high into the sky through cirrus clouds,
and he was thankful for his metal alloy exterior as
it provided a barrier for him from the moisture in
the air. He soared continuously through the clouds
until he passed over the equator.

Steve landed 9,000 feet above sea-level and quite near a
volcano. The ground was uneven and some igneous
rocks could be found lying around. This volcano was clearly
not dormant and had erupted before as it was currently. He
had never seen pahoehoe or magma because volcanoes
didn't exist on his planet. Although the lava seemed to be
flowing in slow motion, Steve knew he shouldn't take his
chances here. He was sure that if the lava caught up to him,
there would be some pretty negative effects. He did
wonder to himself if these volcanoes could be responsible
for the extinction of dinosaurs he had only heard about in
stories back home. But he didn't reflect on that thought long
because he was beginning to smell unpleasant vapors
coming from the volcano. It was, once again, time to go.

Steve traveled this time to a place with
temperatures nearing zero degrees
Fahrenheit. He flew past glaciers and icebergs
and he followed a blizzard. Steve noticed this land
had very little minerals and it was primarily
covered in ice and snow. In fact, he found himself
standing in snowfall with wind whistling by.
This polar environment developed feelings inside
Steve that maybe it was time to return home. His
duration on earth was filled with infinite
exploration, but he longed for something specific.
