In the summer of the sixth grade, all of my buddies frommy street and I started to try to do tricks with our bikes. So, One day
we came up with the idea of making dirt bike jumps in the woods.
"Remember kid, there's heroes and there's legends.
Heroes get remembered but legends never die, follow your heart
kid, and you'll never go wrong." - The Babe

I have an idea!2

One the next day, we went in my basement to gather tools to build the ramps.None of us had ever done this before . Tommy said that his older brother built some
ramps with his friends a couple years ago, but they were across town. So, onward
with the plan we went.
"Let me tell you something kid; Everybody gets one chance to do something great.
Most people never take the chance, either because they're too scared, or they
don't recognize it when it spits on their shoes."- The Babe

After collecting all the tools, we went out into the woods and started to dig. With only a general plan, and each having a different
vision, it was a groggy start. But we were determined, and nothing was
going to stop us from making these jumps.
The spirit of our summer is in this dialogue.
"Benny Rodriguez: Man, you think too much! I bet you get straight
A's and shit!
Scotty Smalls: No, I got a B once. Well, actually it was an
A minus but it should have been a B.
Benny Rodriguez: Man, this is baseball, you gotta stop thinking!
Just have fun. If you were having fun, you would have caught
that ball!"

One particular day when we were building the ramps, I got into an argument with Pete. He wanted to make one of the ramps in a different
place, but I said lets just finish the ones we are working on first. We hated
each other for a couple of days, but eventually we both set aside our difference
of opinion, and continued working on the ramps.
"I take it back. You're not in trouble, you're dead where you stand."
- Mr. Mertle
What the heckare you doing Pete?
I'm building a new jump!

After much hard work and determinationwe were finally finished with the jumps.
Although they may not have been the best
jumps, we certainly were proud of them.
Woohoo!
Wow!
Awsome6

This story reminds me much ofa classic coming of age children's
novel, and much of the movie
The Sandlot. This was our Sandlot.
"Baseball was life! And I was good at
it... real good." - Mr. Mertle
