The Eye Factory2

Follow me!
Hello! I'm Dr.Eyeball. I'd like to introduce
you to the wonderful World of our Visual
System. Did you know just how magical our
eyes are? There are different parts of the
eye that work together to help us see what
we see everyday.Let's take a journey through
the eye factory to explore some more!

3

To enter the factory, we must first catch a wave! These are not just any waves; These are the magnificent light waves.
What makes these waves special are that not all waves can be seen by
the human eye.Light waves are a part of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Some waves that are invisible are waves we don't see everyday but always use.
These includes the use of microwaves when we heat up our food

4

Light waves help us see color. The color we see depends on how fastthe waves are moving up and down; which is called frequency. When we see
colors, we are actually seeing the color that is bouncing off of an object.
Objects absorb (suck in) their color from the light waves. The visible colors of
the electromagnetic spectrum are colors we can find in a rainbow (red, orange,
yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet).
Color Perception. How We See Colors:

Light bulbs line up and prepare for entry into the eye!
The light bulbs come here to go through the iris first. The iris isthe colored part of your eye. It controls the amount of light that
goes into your eye by changing the size of the pupil. The pupil is the
dark circle in the middle of the colored part of your eye.
6

The bulbs must do their best to be accepted by the iris. When the irisdetects its brightness it will change the size of the pupil by making
it smaller. Let's walk over to the Pupil Project room to see how it works!

7

The Light Pupil Project Room
Here we test the pupils to make surethey are working correctly.
We begin by turning the lights on.
Once the room is bright, the pupil
should start to shrink.

8

The Dark Pupil Project Room
Once the pupils pass the first part, the next step is to turn the
lights off. When the room is dark
the pupil should become bigger
since there is less light.

9

In order to make something you look at not seemblurry, the lens helps to make things clear for you by
changing its shape.
Lindsay Lens here! You can find me right behind the pupil. I focus the light that is coming into the eye on the retina. My job at the eye factory is to change my shape
and make things clear each time the eye is focusing on an object.

10

When the eye wants to focus on something that is close by, my job is to become round so
the image is clear. Look how my body got more round
in order to see the balloons clearly when up close.

11

When the eye wants to focus on something that is far away,my job is to flatten out so the image is clear. The balloons
here are far away so I have to bend the light by flattening myself.
This is done so the balloons can be seen clearly.
12

On the chalkboard you can see a picture of the eye. You will notice that at the back of the eye you will findthe retina. The retina has special cells called rods and cones. These cells react to light and respond
differently each time changes of brightness or darkness occur. We will head to the science lab where
Randy Rod and Carla Cone will explain more of what they do!
