Animal ShelterRex was a sweet kid with a big heart. He absolutely loved
animals. He decided for his 10th birthday that instead of
presents, he wanted his friends to bring donations for the
local animal shelter.

"Wow Rex! Is this for all of the animals?" gushed the woman
at the shelter. Rex just stood there with a big smile on his
face. "Would you like to go visit the cats and dogs now? "Oh
boy!" Rex exclaimed.

Rex loved to visit all of the kitties but it made him sad that he
couldn't take them all home. One of the ladies at the shelter
handed a soft. fluffy white kitty for Rex to hold. She was so
sweet. She purred the entire time he held her and rubbed her
face against his cheek. It upset him that he couldn't take her
home. He said goodbye to the kitties and headed over to the
kennels to visit the dogs.

The kennels were always so loud as the dogs all started
barking. They jumped up and down trying to catch Rex's
attention. He went over and talked to as many of them as he
could. As he was getting ready to leave, he wasn't sure but he
thought he heard a snorting sound.

He walked to the last kennel where he saw a little piggy
looking up at him. The pig was so tiny, pink, and cute. He
oinked at Rex who started to laugh. When no one was
looking, he put his fingers inside the cage. The pig started to
lick Rex's fingers. "Okay Rex, time to go!" his Dad called out
to him. As he was leaving, Rex kept turning around to see the
pig's sweet little face starting back at him.

"Rex, you've been such a good boy lately that your father and I have
decided that you're ready to have a pet" Mom happily told him. "We
will go to the shelter tomorrow and adopt a new friend" Dad added.

The next morning, Rex and his Dad drove to the shelter. Rex
went straight to the kennel and found the little pig that he
saw the last time. "I want the piggy!" he squealed. "Are you
sure? They have cats and dogs here too you know" Dad
responded. "No. I want this guy" Rex said as he held the
pudgy little pig in his arms.
