This alphabet book is for preschoolers aged four years old. It should be shared with
children by reading it to them, reading it with them, and allowing them to read alone
frequently. By repeated opportunities to read and write, preschoolers develop literacy
skills that will help them throughout their academic career.
This book meets the Virginia Literacy Foundation Block Four. This standard is stated as:
The child will demonstrate basic knowledge of the alphabetic principle and understand that
the letters in written words represent the sounds in spoken words. It is intended to help
children learn and become more familiar with their ABCs as well as help them associate
letters with animal names both through print and pictures.
In addition, this book meets Virginia Literacy Foundation Block Five: Print and Book
Awareness. This standard says that a child will demonstrate knowledge of print concepts
and understand the connection between the spoken and written word through specifically
related activities.
Children progress mentally, emotionally, and academically at different rates. When
parents and teachers allow children to work at their own pace and seek to meet their
academic needs, children can profit by individual support through differed approaches and
advanced exercises, such as the ones listed in Blocks Four and Five of the Virginia Literacy
Foundations.
