Midnight Mess was a black race horse,
and he was excited. Today was going to
be his big day. Today was his first race.
But his owners had a secret. They
knew he was so fast that he could set a
new record, so they had entered him in
a huge race. The two most famous
competitors would be Cowie, a world
famous brown horse, and Simie, a
record setting bolt.

Midnight Mess's trailer arrived at the race track. He
pranced into the starting gate. "And they're off!" called
the announcer, "I believe this is one of the best races
yet! Cowie has taken the lead, as suspected. Wait a
second, Midnight Mess is gaining! What's wrong with
Simie, she's still in the gate! Oh I see, she's stumbled.
What is this? Midnight Mess just passed Cowie. And
they're nearly under the wire!"
Suddenly Midnight Mess sped up even more! The
crowd gasped as the new horse beat world famous
Cowie and record setting Simie. "Why" said a shocked
announcer, "Midnight Mess has won!"

Winner!

It was in the newspaper! Headlines read "New Horse
Wins Race!" and "Midnight Mess Wins Kentucky Derby!".
Midnight Mess was thrilled! He teased the other horses
about how great he was,and at first they were just
proud of him. Then, he began to rub it in that he was
the best, and that got to them. Soon Midnight Mess was
without a single friend.

But Midnight Mess didn't care. To him, this simply
meant he had nothing to lose. He bullied the other
horses, teasing, kicking, being just plain rude. He
called them names and said bad things about them. He
insulted them all day long. His owners separated him
from the others, but he felt just as proud of himself.
He was still winning races. He had beat Simie. He had
defeated Cowie. He had won the Kentucky Derby. Then
he won the Preakness. Both were huge races. If he
won the third, the Belmont Stakes, he would go down
in history. Before that happened he would race again,
just to prove himself to the world. But on that race day
he felt very lonely, almost sick of loneliness...

He felt so lonely that he lost his race. He lost his
winning streak. He lost his fans. He lost his glory in
the winner's circle after each win. He cried afterward
but no one cared to comfort him. He was now very
alone, and it was now that he realized that he needed
his friends. They would understand. After all, they had
won and lost. They had gone from loved by all to
slopping through mud in the retired paddock. The had
stood in the winner's circle and been last under the
wire. They would know what to do.
