The American government is known as a democracy. In a democracy, citizens have roles and responsibilities. Anna has roles and responsibilities because she is a citizen.
3
As an adult, Anna needs to be an informed citizen. She needs to be informed about the government, laws and who holds certain positions of power. The United States government expects Anna to know and follow federal, state and local laws.

4
Part of being an informed citizen means that Anna must know and uphold the values of the Constitution. The United States government was built on the Constitution.

As a citizen, Anna is also responsible for voting in local and national elections. Before Anna votes, she registers herself as a member of a political party. Anna may register herself as a member of the democratic or republican party. Then she will go to a local voting center and vote for the candidate she thinks will be the best for the position.
6

Anna is also expected to give back to her community through volunteer or charity work. Anna loves to volunteer at a local soup kitchen. At the soup kitchen, Anna serves meals to people who are homeless.
7

Anna is a good citizen because she participates in her local community. Anna assists Mrs. Mendez across the busy street every morning on her way to work.
8

Once a year, Anna may be called upon to serve on a jury. If she is called upon, she has to serve on the jury until the case is complete and a verdict is decided. A court case could last anywhere from a few days to a few months.
