Shaggy and wet the little puppy sat alone under the lilac tree. His brown and white fur was matted from the rain. It was impossible to tell whether it was tears or raindrops that fell from below the sad little eyes. The little puppy shivered and shook as he watched the house and the two little children looking out the window. He wondered if they would ever come out, for it seemed like such a long time since they had gone in the night before. But the little puppy knew if he left he might never see them again.

“Mother, please can we go out and play? We will stay out of the mud and it has almost stopped raining,” promised Michael, the oldest.
“Yeth, please let me play,” cried Robbie, the youngest. “Maybe we can find the puppy.”
Michael joined with his brother and together they pleaded with their mother to let them go out so they could find the funny little puppy they had been playing with the night before. Finally their mother agreed. So bundled up in raincoats and rainhats the two energetic little boys ran outside.to play

“Here puppy,” called Robbie. “Here puppy.”
“Come to me little puppy,” urged Michael. “We won’t hurt you. We want to play with you. Come here little puppy.”
Carefully the little puppy looked out from his hiding place. Were these the same boys he played with yesterday? These boys were dressed in coats and hats not shirts and pants. "Should he go out?" he wondered
After a few minutes the puppy decided to trust these two boys. So slowly and quietly he crept out from beneath the tree.

As soon as the boys saw him they rushed and picked him up. They took turns cuddling and rocking him. They smoothed his wet shaggy fur so it wasn’t over his eyes and softly talked to him about the fun they could have playing with him, if he would just stay and not run away.
Michael gently picked up the little puppy and with Robbie right behind him took the puppy in the house. Silently, so mother wouldn’t hear them, the two boys sneaked upstairs to the bathroom. Robbie filled the sink with water while Michael found a clean towel. Together they did their childlike best to get all the mud off the little puppy. They rubbed him with the towel until his fur was fluffy and dry. They took their mother’s hairbrush and brushed until the puppy’s fur was smooth and soft. Only then did they let their mother know they had brought the puppy in the house.

At first mother did not want to keep the puppy. No one knew where he had come from or if he belonged to someone else. Finally she agreed to let the boys keep the puppy for at least a week before she decided. If nobody had asked about him or if he stayed on his own the boys would be able to keep him.
All week the boys checked the lost and found ads, hoping nothing would appear. They asked their friends they had lost a puppy. Their father asked neighbors in area if they had lost a puppy but none claimed the lonely puppy.

Meanwhile the little puppy was growing content and happy. When he had first come he was thin and scraggly. Now, with the food and bones the boys gave him each day, he was growing a bit plump. After the boys finished brushing his fur he almost looked like a roly-poly ball of fluff. He was happy in his new home, as happy as any little puppy could be. The only problem was that he had no name.
