"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
Martin Luther King

My name is Tisha, and I'm going to tell you about my very first day of school in England.
It started with mum and dad walking me to school in the morning. I didn't want to leave them, I was so scared!
I didn't know whether the other children would like me.

My new teacher was called Miss Carpenter and she introduced me to the class.
The teacher said that two girls named Anne and Jane had to be my buddies and take care of me.
They seemed really nice!

We went out to play, and we were having so much fun!
They wanted me to play truth or dare, so I chose truth.
Anne asked me: 'Why was your mum wearing a scarf on her head this morning? It's not cold.'
I laughed, and I said: 'No silly, it's called a hijab. Where I'm from it's part of our culture- we're Muslims.

Then Jane said: 'What?! You're a Muslim?! My mum said that all Muslims were terrorists and that we shouldn't talk to them. I don't think you should play with us anymore."
I shouted: "We're not terrorists! We're just like everybody else!"
I started crying.
10
No one had ever been so horrible to me. Where I was from, women would get in trouble if they didn't wear their hijab, but here, wearing it was seen as a bad thing.
I wanted to go home.

11
When I got home I told mum and dad about my day. They didn't seem very happy.
The next day mum and dad promised they would talk to my teacher. They had a plan, but they wouldn't tell me what it was.

The next day, Miss Carpenter told the class that there was going to be a multicultural day.
Everyone was excited.

"Tisha Goes to School"
Muslims are somewhat demonised in the media, and the media is important in shaping one's perception of people or ideas. Research carried out by the University of Wisconsin demonstrated that the best way to reduce prejudice and stereotypes people have adopted because of the media, is to show Muslims positively and help people identify with them. They discovered doing this helped people adopt a long-lasting, positive attitude towards Muslims. I wanted to achieve a similar result with this book.
