Dedicated to my 4th grade teacher.

There was a little monarch caterpillar named James. He was a really kind caterpillar. He was getting ready to build his chrysalis when a bird swooped down and tried to catch him. Luckily, James dodged it and was safe. As fast as he could, he ran to his friend Daniel who was also a caterpillar. When James told Daniel what happened, Daniel didn't believe him and told James that he wouldn't move from where he was and he liked where he was.

James went alone looking for a nice, comfortable spot to build his chrysalis in. It was really hard to find a good spot but he couldn't give up so he kept on looking. When he finally found a spot, he started making his chrysalis. While making his chrysalis, he heard a distant bird cry and a little shriek that sounded familiar. It was his friend Daniel! James had to help Daniel even though James was mad at him. He knew that that's what friends have to do

James started running as fast as his tiny legs could take him and he finally saw Daniel. The bird had Daniel in its mouth to feed its babies, and Daniel looked really scared. All the baby birds were chirping in hunger. James tried to make a little leaf wing and try to fly but it wouldn't work. He tried many other things and they all wouldn't work. The bird was really close so James had nothing to do but climb up as fast as he could. When he got to the nest, he took a leaf and covered himself with it. He then waited until the mother bird put Daniel in the nest.

When the mother bird put Daniel in the nest, James pulled Daniel under the leaf and they both escaped while the birds were chirping in confusion. Daniel thanked James and said sorry to him for not believing him. After that, both of them went to the place that James found and built their chrysalis next to each other. In about two weeks, they were both beautiful monarch butterflies. After that, they lived happily ever after.
