One beautiful day in the Texas Blackland Prarie, a Golden Winged Warbler named Goldywing was hopping along some Tall Import Bermuda Grass. He hadn't eaten in days, and was really hungry for some food. He saw a box of matches from a previous fire, a big rock with no insects, but no food. This bird was starting to get angry. How could there be no food! So, Goldywing tried to come up with a plan. But before anything happend, a certain smell wafted into his beak. It smelled tasty!

The bird decided to spread its wings and fly. She decided to use her keen sense of sight and smell to try and spot where the smell was coming from. Today was a lucky day for her because it was pure daytime. Goldywings loved the day. She always flew and hunted in the daylight.1 She put her mind to flying, and soon enough, she was hovering right over the delicious smell. She swooped down and she knew she had found it. But when she figured out what it was, she got scared!

I can't Wait to get to that yummy food. Good thing that the sky is so clear. I like the day and the sky so much... Yaaaayyyy! Foooood!

The food was inside a snake burrow! Lucky for the bird, it was starting to get late. These snakes had a better sense of smell than sight, and liked to operate in the night.2 Goldywings waited in a small corner of the burrow until the sky was as black as the snakes eyes. Goldywings hopped down from her perch traveled down to the burrow floor to get a good look at the food. It was a delicious looking prarie jackrabbit to eat.

Finally, she tried the body, for the baby...
JUST RIGHT! Goldywings wasn't strong enough to get food for herself, so she scavenged off others food.3

Goldywings was now feeling really tired. She normally ate all types of food, including plants, seeds, and meats. She ate many foods!4 So, she kept looking around the burrow. It was nighttime and she needed a bed. She tried the Papa Snakes bed, but it was TOO HARD!

Goldywings tried the next bed, Mama's bed. Yet, this time, the bed was TOO SOFT!

By now, the little bird was starting to get fed up. She saw one final bed. It was the baby snakes bed. It was perfect. It was made out of fine Bluestill grass. Goldywings fell right into a deep sleep. All birds have a clock on the inside of their body5. Goldywings clock was telling her it was time to take a nap.

As Goldywings was sleeping nicely back at the snake burrow, the snakes were on their daily walk. The bunny was not enough for the whole family. So, the snakes were also out for food. They only ate meat and animals, so they had to be good hunters on the lookout.

While the snake family walked along the beautiful Gamma grass, they heard a familiar HOOT! It was their friend, the owl. The owl was very nice, and gave the snakes knowledge and information, but didn't really get anything in return. It was a special little relationship6. So, the snakes stopped by to listen to the Burrowing Owl.

The owl hopped down from his perch into a small bed of thick Indian grass. The owl hooted and hooted crazily until the mama snake got him to quiet up. Once the owl got calmed down, he told the snakes of what was really going on. An invasive species warbler was in their burrow! The snakes were very scared, so they thanked the owl and started hurrying back home.
