Once upon a time there was a girl named Akila. Her daily task was to go pick berries for her village. Every day she would walk through a forest which would lead her to a stream. The stream had clumps of bushes around it where she would pick her berries. Once she finished picking berries and putting them in her wicker basket, she would always watch the salmon in the water. She loved watching them swim so free in the water, and every day after picking berries, she would watch the salmon for hours.

berries and putting them in her wicker basket. Her basket was about half full of berries when she noticed something. The stream seemed more quiet.
Akila looked down the river but this time she did not see any salmon swimming. At first she thought it was just her eyes playing tricks on her. She looked harder. But she still only saw the river sweeping leaves and sticks down the stream.
3
Then she realized it was not her eyes playing tricks on her; it was real She looked everywhere but she still did not see any salmon. Akila looked up the stream and saw a giant cage full of salmon. It was surrounded by a group of fishermen who looked very pleased with themselves. That was where all of the salmon had gone!
4
“Help, I am so hungry,” said a voice.
“Hello? Where are you?” asked Akila
She listened to where the voice was coming from. It was coming from a big rock near the stream. She looked over. There was a hungry looking Otter staring straight at her.
5
“All the salmon have been all caged up. I always go two times a day to catch and eat a salmon right by this rock from the stream. But lately there have not been any salmon. Some people have been caging them all,” said Otter.
“That’s terrible,” said Akila. “Every morning I go to the stream to pick some berries, and when I am done I watch the salmon. But they are not here today.”
6
“I know!” cried Otter. “Once the salmon told me about her wise grandmother who could really help with this.”
“Who?” asked Akila.
“You will see,” said Otter. “But you have to promise you will not tell anybody where this place is.”
“Okay,” promised Akila.
7
Akila did not say anything as she followed Otter. He scurried very fast. He must have been very hungry. Soon Akila was brought to an old log. “How is this log going to help with our problem?” Akila asked.
All Otter said was: “hold still.”
All of a sudden she felt herself shrink, until she was about the size of a snail.
8
She looked at the log again. Because she was small now she could see a little door in the log. She had to knock on the door for someone to open it. A little woman with an Eagle feather in her hair opened the door. It was a door to a whole secret village. The woman greeted them.
“What are you doing here?” the woman asked.
9
Otter and Akila both explained that all the fish were gone because all the fisherman had caught them and caged them.
“Let me guess,” said the woman. “You came here to talk to the Spirit of the Fish.”
“Yes,” said Otter.
10
“We shall go see her now,” said the woman. They walked through a little door. Inside there was a very old woman with a homemade ancient blanket slung over her shoulders.
“All the fish have been caged!” exclaimed Otter.
