I love living near the beach. I love the fresh sea air and the variety of creatures that call the ocean home. There is nothing I enjoy more than spending a nice quiet evening on the beach watching the sun set. Unfortunately, this solitude has been less frequent. It's tourist season here in Shalamar and that means that it's going to be noisy and crowded all summer long.

Oh goodie, they're here! I know that I sometimes take for granted what a beautiful town I live in but I wish that it was the quiet and sleepy city it is the rest of the year. The tourists leave trash all over the beach. They're very noisy and inconsiderate. And worst of all they tease the local sea creatures. That really gets on my nerves. It's like they've never seen a seagull before.

One warm afternoon a curious-looking creature washed up on shore. "What is it?" one of the tourists asked. "I don't know. It looks like a bug. Don't pick it up. It might bite you or be poisonous." "Nah!", said the man in the hat, "I'm going to take a selfie with it." He picked up the creature and held it up while he had one of his friends take a picture.

Soon the beach was packed with people taking pictures of themselves with the poor animal. He didn't like being held at all as he squirmed to get out of their grasp. As the crowds grew, so too did the amount of garbage that they left behind. There were pop cans, food wrappers, and all kinds of trash scattered about the golden brown sand. Why can't people behave when they go on vacation?

Eventually everybody tired of taking selfies with the creature and left the beach. They left behind such an awful mess. They always do. But right now I was more concerned about the little guy who was lying on his back. He did not look good at all. He had been passed from person to person all afternoon. I couldn't just leave him here so I decided to bring him to the local vet.

I couldn't find a blanket to carry the creature in so I put in a discarded Chinese food box. I rode my bike as fast as I could to the emergency vet clinic. I stormed through the front door and placed the box on the reception desk. The receptionist slowly opened the box and her face turned pale white. "Uh, Dr. Snuggles, you need to get out here now!"

"Where did you find him kid?" the vet asked. "He just washed up on shore. A bunch of tourists started passing him around and taking selfies with him." "This is no ordinary sea creature. This is a nuggie. But they went extinct centuries ago." "If you fix him, can I keep him?" "Oh no. You can't do that. He's just a baby. When they are full grown they are the size of an airplane!"
