I do not like camping. I never did. But every summer my parents would send me off to Camp Blue Jay. I didn't like sleeping in a tent, being bitten by mosquitos, or sing-alongs by the campfire. I wanted to stay home and hang out with my friends this summer.

Don't get me wrong, I love being outside getting lots of fresh air, riding my bike, and going swimming. But I just can't sleep unless I'm in my own bed. This was going to be a very long eight weeks. I took a breath and sighed before I started to help the other kids set up their tents. "Eight weeks Jarvis. It's only eight weeks" I told myself.

It was starting to get dark outside and I was tired from the long bus ride. I really wanted to go to sleep. "Where you going little dude?" one of the camp counsellors asked. "I'm very tired and am going to get some sleep." "No way bro! The fun is just starting. We're going to roast some marshmallows around the campfire and I'm going to sing some tunes."

Forced to attend, the whole thing was as bad as I expected. Skyler tried out some of his "solo material" and it was awful. I didn't get to sleep until 3 a.m. I didn't sleep well as the sounds of the forest kept me up all night. Owls hooted. Crickets chirped. And I thought I heard a coyote howl. The next morning I was exhausted as I sat and ate a disgusting bowl of oatmeal for breakfast.

The past couple of weeks were terrible. I was homesick, bored, and tired. I missed my goldfish, my comic books, my bed, and my parents. I can only imagine how much they missed me. They must be so lonely without me around. Tomorrow we were supposed to go swimming in a cold and muddy lake. It was then that I decided to do something drastic. I would run away from camp!

I wrote a note saying that I wasn't feeling well and that my parents would be coming to pick me up. I left it in my tent for one of the camp counsellors to find. I departed just before the sun started to rise. I was in a rush as I gathered my things and left as fast as I possible, oblivious to the fact that my note was being carried away by the morning breeze.

As I got deeper into the forest I began to hear all sorts of creepy sounds. I felt like I had a thousand pairs of eyes staring at me. Is someone or something following me? A troll? A wolf? A bear? Or worse? I shouldn't have left the campsite. I dropped my bag and started to run back but tripped and hurt my ankle. The last thing I remember was lying on the cold forest floor.

When I woke up, everything around me was blurry. It looked like I was in a cave. I tried to stand up but my ankle was too sore. When I looked up I saw a big hairy beast staring back at me. We both screamed. It appeared that we were afraid of each other. Was that Bigfoot? I thought he was a myth. He kindly offered me a fish he had caught in the lake. "Um, no thanks. I already ate."

When the camp counsellors came upon my empty tent, they became worried. They got the other kids to help look for me. After a while they decided to call the park rangers to go find me. Not only was it foolish of me to run off all alone into the forest, but now I also had a bunch of people worried about me. And what if they called my parents? I'd be in so much trouble when I got home.

Bigfoot didn't speak. He would just make grunting sounds. He began to rub his tummy and looked over at me. "Huh? Oh! Yes! I'm very hungry." We wandered back into the forest in search of something to eat. I started to limp so Bigfoot give me a piggyback ride and carried me over to some bushes filled with juicy berries. I stuffed my face with raspberries and blackberries.

Bigfoot and I were having so much fun eating berries. Our faces were awfully messy. While I continued to pick berries, Bigfoot suddenly stopped. He looked frightened. "What is it Bigfoot?" I asked. And then I heard voices and the humming of an engine. I couldn't let them find us. We had to find a safe place to hide. But where do you hide a seven foot monster?
