XYZ Affair:On October 18, 1797, three Americans who were sent to France by President John Adams to represent a U.S. peace commission, were received coolly and then asked to pay a bribe in order to speak with French Foreign Minister Charles Maurice Talleyrand.
Adams also took part in the creation of the Declaration of Independence.

1. First President to live in the White House.
2. Defended British Soldiers on trial after the Boston Massacre.
3. Was elected as 1 of the 5 to represent the Massachusetts Colony at the First Continental Congress in 1774.

Thomas Jefferson:
Thomas Jefferson was not only the first Secretary of State or the 3rd President of the United States, but he played a key role in making this country in what it is today.

Events Jefferson was Involved In:
Louisiana Purchase: In 1803, Jefferson got into a deal between the United States and France, in which the U.S. acquired approximately 827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River for $15 million.
Lewis and Clark Expedition: Jefferson conducted two men to travel West of States to discover new lad opportunities after the Louisiana Purchase.

Facts about Thomas Jefferson:
1. Helped develop the Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence.
2. Began and designed University of Virginia, in his eyes that was his greatest accomplishment.
3. Never believed in owning slaves.

John Marshall:
Marshall was involved with the practice of law heavily. He worked with many important cases throughout his career.

Events John Marshall was Involved In:
Marbury V.S. Madison- The result of this case established the basis of judicial review.
McCulloch V.S. Maryland- President Madison had opened in 1816. The State of Maryland imposed a tax on the national bank, which the bank refused to pay. Maryland claimed that nothing in the Constitution gave the federal government the right to open a national bank.

1. Transformed the Supreme Court in many ways turning it into a strong and equal third branch of the U.S. government.
2. One outcome of a case he was on created Judicial Review
3. His rulings changed how the Supreme Court works today.
