This book is dedicated to my favorite little brother, Kyle.

This is Titus the tardigrade. Also known as Titus the water bear or even Titus the moss piglet, he isn't picky. Tardigrades are microscopic organisms with 8 arms, each with 4 claws, lots of pudge and a large set of razor sharp teeth. He may look scary but have no fear! He's only 0.5mm in size. He hopes to one day grow to 1.5mm. Keep on hoping Titus!

At the tippy top of the tallest mountain, in the deep depths of the ocean, with the monkeys in the rainforest, in the center of a volcano, or even antarctica with the penguins. Titus could live anywhere his little non existent heart desires! But he chooses to live right here, amongst the moss where he grew up.

When Titus gets hungry he likes to munch on the fluid from plant and animal cells. Sometimes he chooses to snack on bacteria. Tardigrades are omnivores but some are carniverous and will eat other living organisms such as rotifers and even other tardigrades! Watch out Titus!

They use their razor sharp teeth like "suckers" to extract the nutrients from their food. Some tardigrades even cosume their prey whole!

You may think it's all fun and games for Titus, but it's not. He too has to watch out for predators along the way. Tardigrades are prey to amoebas and nemotodes, and like I said before, they even have to watch out for other tardigrades trying to eat them! It's a hard life for a water bear.

Did you know that tardigrades are said to have been around for over 500 billion years! This means that they have been around since before the dinosaurs roamed the earth. In fact, they have survived all 5 of the mass extinctions on our planet!

Tardigrades are known as the toughest animals on earth!

They can survive extremely hot temperatures of 300 degrees fahrenheit! Good thing Titus doesn't mind getting a tan.

They can even survive extremely cold temperatures of -458 degrees fahrenheit. That's close to below zero! In fact, a scientist actually revived a tardigrade that had been frozen for over 30 years in Antarctica! Good thing Titus owns a sweater as well.

Tardigrades can also survive x-ray radiation 1000x the lethal human dose, some noxious chemicals, boiling alcohol, and lack of food and water for up to 10 years!

But wait, there's more! Tardigrades can survive very low pressure vaccums, such as space. In fact, in 2007, scientists sent out a satelite with tardigrades aboard it and after about 10 days they brought it back, revived the tardigrades with water and found that most had survived! The only damage was to their DNA and cellular material from the ultraviolet radiation found in space. So I guess Titus does have a weakness after all.
