Tsunamis occur when an earthquake from under the ocean erupts. They cause the water from the ocean to move forward to the shore. Tsunamis can cause floods, and can cause drowning.

What are Tsunamis?

Basically, the underwater earthquake causes huge waves to crash against the shore.

How to Recognize a Tsunami

Look for these:

-Earthquakes that lasts 20 seconds or more near the coast

-A noticeable rapid rise or fall in coastal waters

Be Prepared

If you live near the coast, make sure your family has a box of these supplies in case of a flood:

-a first aid kit

-canned or packaged food

-bottled water

-flashlight with extra batteries

Also know if you live in an area that a tsunami could hit.

How to Escape from a Tsunami

1.If you hear an official tsunami warning, get as far away from the shore as you can.

2.Get to high elevation where the water can't reach you.

3.Wait for the tsunami to end before moving to a different location.

If you are stuck in the water:

1.Don't fight the water. If you try to swim against it, you'll lose energy.

2.Grab on to an object that can float. Find tree trunks or any furniture.

3.Try to go with the direction of the tsunami, and that will take you back to shore.

If you are in a building near the shore:

1.Go to the highest story of that building to escape from the rising water.

2.Make sure anyone else near you gets to the top as well.

3.Try to tune in to a radio station or TV network to find out more about the tsunami.

The aftermath of a tsunami

1.Aftershocks and additional waves are likely to occur after the tsunami, so be prepared.

2. Get information: listen to the radio and wait for an official to say that the tsunami has ended.

3. When the tsunami is finally over, go out and help others that are stuck in their house.
