This book is dedicated to all of my fans. Thanks for keeping me cool during the summertime.
And Sara Murphy.

Kain and Mabel are brother and sister. They are both in second grade, but they are almost complete opposites.

Kain likes things to be neat and in order. His favorite things to do are read books and organize his room.

Mabel likes to run around and has lots of energy. Her room is always messy, and she doesn't mind. One of her favorite things to do is play with her ball.

One day, Kain and Mabel were in the backyard. Mabel was kicking around a soccer ball while Kain was sprawled out in the grass reading a book under a tree.

Mabel continued to run around the yard, shouting with glee whenever she kicked the ball. Suddenly, she kicked the ball right into Kain!

"Hey! You made me lose my spot!" Kain complained.
"It's not my fault," countered Mabel. "You should read inside."
Kain became angry. "I don't want to read inside. I like reading outside."

Just then, their parents walked outside.
"Kain? Mabel? What's wrong?" Their mother asked.
"Mabel kicked the ball at me and made me lose my spot," Kain explained.
"No, I didn't. I was just playing with it, and it hit him. I didn't mean to. It wouldn't have happened if he would read inside," Mabel wined, defending herself.

"You two need to quit arguing. You should learn to work together," their father announced.
"This is your last warning. The next time we have to come out here, you two will be holding hands for the rest of the day," their mother added with a warning tone. With that, their parents went back inside.

Immediately after the door clicked shut, the two began to argue again.
"It's your fault!" Mabel shouted.
Kain screamed back, "No it isn't! It's yours!"
Back and forth, they continued their screaming match, the ball and book completely forgotten.

After a couple of minutes, their mother came back outside. Suddenly, they both went silent. Eyes to the ground, the two said nothing.
“That’s it. I warned you. Now, for the rest of the day, you two will hold each other’s hands,” their mom said with satisfaction.

With a look of surprise on her face, Mabel cried, "I don't want to hold his hand! He doesn't do anything besides read his book and clean his room!"
Kain also was shocked to hear this announcement. "I can't hold Mabel's hand. All she does is run around, and she yells all the time!"
"I guess you two will have to figure this out together," their mother responded with finality. With that, she turned and went back inside the house.

Kain and Mabel turned to face each other, their faces full of disgust, and took each other's hand.

Almost instantly, the two disagreed on what to do. Kain wanted to go sit and read his book, but Mabel wanted to play wither her ball.

After a lot of pushing and pulling, the two decide to find something to do inside.

Once inside, Mabel went straight for the toy room, but was stopped in her tracks by Kain.

He was headed towards his room.

Nothing that one wanted to do interested the other. If Kain wanted to watch a movie, Mabel wanted to ride her bike.
