Now as the holiday season approaches let us share with our students the significance of some elements that are widely used as Christmas Symbols. Christmas is the festival which is celebrated world-wide with equal vigour and zeal. Apart from traditions, rituals and customs, there are symbols as well which are popularly associated with the celebration of this particular festival.

In fact, these symbols have become so common with the masses that through these symbols people come to know that Christmas has actually arrived. So, following are some of the symbols that have been eventually attached with the celebration of the day.
Getting familiar with these symbols is a great way to rediscover the true meaning of Christmas

Christmas Symbols in National Traditions
Angel
I bring all the good news from God…
I welcome the renewal of light that is why I accompany this illuminated celebration. I stand for immortality, virtue, peace, love and innocence.
Stefanos - NikolasA.
I am an evergreen tree, fresh and pure
•and strong; everlasting just like God,
•alive all year round. My branches invigorate the spirit during the grey winter days.
Tree

Santa
I am the reason for the season. I represent the spirit of giving, generosity and the will to do good. I make you draw your eyes to the sky, invite you to believe in something greater than yourself.

Presents
We love changing hands because we show people’s love for one another.

Bell
I jingle all season long to spread joy and happiness, love and generosity.
I jingle to say Christmas is here wherever I go reminding you to stay pure and clean.

Stocking
Tonight I am filled with gifts and treats for all the little ones; and in the morning I will put a sweet smile on their beautiful faces…
I show that even the emptiest heart can be filled to the top with love!

Cane
I remind of the staffs the shepherds carried to rescue sheep strayed from the flock…
My red stripes remind of blood shed for us, my green for the hope that never fades and my white for purity and light.

Star
I represent the great light that led the shepherds and the wise men to baby Jesus. I point to illumination and clarity in vision during this divine season.

Candle
My light spreads warmth to all people’s heart and soul. As a light bringer I represent pure positive energy and spiritual illumination, you light me to make a wish.

Mistletoe
Neither a srub nor a tree, wherever you put me you bring honor to me. I make you feel free and at peace and if you feel loved you get a kiss beneath me.

I am round as a circle, made of holly and ivy; I have no beginning or end. I am like an unbreakable bond proving the continuity of life. I resemble a ring. People put me in their front door at Christmas as a decoration. I am usually made of evergreens and I have got two colours; red and green. I symbolize strength, as evergreens last even throughout the harshest winters.

Gingerbread
I have the color of the earth. I look funny but I taste like candy.

I am no common, instead I am noble. I am a worthy animal trusted to carry the Christmas gifts.
Reindeer

Reindeer
by Chris S.
I inspire wisdom and enchantment. I symbolize the magic of Christmas pulling Santa’s sleigh and the enchanted ability to take flight and circle the world in an entire night on Christmas Eve…landing on the roofs of your houses where Santa pops down the chimney in the wink of an eye, and then in a flash we reindeers are off to the next house.
Decorations
Each ornament symbolizes something: home protection, good luck, the unity of the family. Normally we decorate the Christmas tree with many colored balls. Christmas balls represent apples hanging on the branches of sacred trees which were use to make the spirits of nature and the fertility of the earth return.

I am a beloved Christmas symbol you enjoy creating with your loved ones adding your own personal touches following the first snowfalls of the winter season. I have three snowballs, layered on top of one another, combined with coal for the eyes and mouth, a carrot for a nose, tree branches for arms, a scarf, and of course, a black top hat.

Christmas Pudding
In order to cook me you have to stir many times. I hide inside me a treasure and if you are lucky your wish for the new year to come will be granted!
Tassos P.
Christmas pudding is an old British tradition. There is a lot of symbolism connected to this famous pudding. It has been an important part of the Christmas celebrations for centuries.
Lampros K.
It was required that every person in the household, including servants, took turns stirring the pudding. Each person was to stir three times. As each person stirred in the pudding they would concentrate on making a wish.
