I dedicate this book to the Clallam County School Retiree's Association and to my third grade teacher, Mrs. Riggs.

Snowey and Sparrow were littermates. Snowey got her name from her father, whose nickname was Snowey and she herself was stabbing bright white. Sparrow, on the other hand, was small and black and orange. Sparrow has acute hearing.
prologue
Chapter One
One day, Snowey and Sparrow were climbing trees in the forest. They were having a race to see who could climb the fastest. Sparrow won, of course because he usually climbs fast. When Snowey finally reached the top, she looked down and meowed, “uh-oh, I can’t get down!”
“Coming!” meowed Sparrow.
Later, Snowey and Sparrow were playing in the “Snow Plains” when Snowey lost track of Sparrow. “Sparrow?” Snowey asked, “SPARROW!” Yelled Snowey. "Weird, he was right there," thought Snowey.
“HERE!”
“What?”
“HELP! OVER HERE!”
“Where?”
“HERE!”
She ran towards the noise.
“HE-“
Snowey stopped in her tracks, in front of her was the place she had heard the noise, “He’s in there? Ugh.” she meowed as she started digging.
“Ouch.” meowed Sparrow.
“You okay?” asked Snowey.
“Cold, but okay.”
“You sure?”
“YES.”
“Okay.”
The next day, they woke to a blizzard brewing to the East.
“It’s snowing!” meowed Sparrow. Sparrow ran outside. Snowey had no choice but to follow.
“Blizzard?” Snowey meowed to herself. “BLIZZARD! Run to the trees!” she yelled.
“Phew” they meowed at the same exact time when they got to the trees.
A few hours later, after the blizzard had faded, Snowey peeked out of their hole, “The blizzard has faded,” meowed Snowey,
The “Snow Plains” now had hundreds of snow banks. Snowey wished that there was a path through the banks. Suddenly she heard a lot of “pffs,” she looked around, and she saw a path!
“A path!” yelled Snowey.
Chapter Two:
The Snow Maze
She took a step forward. “Pff.” Another step. “Pff.”
“Sparrow?” whispered a trembling Snowey.
“What?” meowed Sparrow.
“The path changes every step I take.” meowed Snowey. “Look.” She took a step. “Pff”
“Wow.” meowed Sparrow.
It was changing into a maze. They trekked and trekked through the ever-changing maze. They stopped to hunt and rest. They trekked and wound they’re way around the ever-changing monster of a maze for 10 days. Occasionally there were strange rumbles in the night.
They had made it to the end. Or so they thought. The exit was a wall of ice with the word “EXIT” glowing above a double-door shape crack in the ice.
“Look, there’s two buttons.” meowed Snowey.
“But they’re frozen,” meowed Sparrow, “and so is the door.”
“Let’s see what I can do.” Meowed Snowey. She went up to the door and put her paw on it. The ice on the door melted away.
“Wow,” meowed Sparrow, “that’s cool!”
Snowey touched the other two buttons, but only one button’s ice melted.
“Sparrow, touch the other button.” Meowed Snowey. Sparrow did. “The button’s ice melted!” he yelped.
“Calm down. Hit your button as hard as you can on 3.” meowed Snowey, “1-2-3!” They hit their buttons. An alarm went off. A deadbolt in the door slid out. Then another and another until all the deadbolts were unbolted. Creak. The door started to open. Creak. It stopped.
“Oh-no!” meowed Snowey. Just then it slammed open.
“AH!” they yelped.
But that was only the beginning
Chapter Three:
The Tunnel
“A tunnel?” asked Snowey, “That’s strange.”
The tunnel clearly hadn’t been used for some time. There were signs of leakage and flooding. (The cats didn’t know this, but in fact the tunnel had been underwater for some time! And the rumbles in the night came from the tunnel emerging from the water. The ice formed immediately from the water dripping down.)
They sped down the tunnel. They heard water around them. At the end, they found another door.
“Where’s the buttons?” asked Sparrow. “Shouldn’t there at least be a button?”
Suddenly the deadbolts started sliding out.
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
“Wha-?” they said, startled.
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
The door continued to unlock.
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
All the deadbolts were out.
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
“What happens now?” Sparrow yelled over the alarm, looking at Snowey, expectantly.
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
“I don’t know!” Snowey yelled back.
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
Finally the door started to open.
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
It opened.
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
The alarm stopped.
“Finally!!” Snowey meowed. She walked out. Then she stopped. “A forest?! What! That’s crazy!”
“Huh? What?” Sparrow called from behind.
“There’s a forest!” Snowey called back. “Come out here!” she continued.
Sparrow came out. Then he heard the alarm again but much quieter.
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
“The alarm! I heard it again, but much quieter, like at the other end of the tunnel! Someone might be following us!” Sparrow meowed, panicked.
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
“I heard it again!” he meowed, even more panicked. “Run!”
“Calm down,” Snowey meowed, exasperated, “IF there is someone chasing us, that cat couldn’t get in because there’s TWO buttons, not one. Anyway I can't hear it."
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
Then Snowey finally heard the alarm.
"Oh. That alarm. But we didn't scent anyone. weird. "
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
Then, the door started closing.
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
"What th-" Snowey said, while Sparrow cringed.
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
"-e heck!?" She finished.
KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP KRRRUP
Both the door and the alarm stopped.
