"Curiosity will conquer fear even more than bravery will."
- James Stephens

My parents divorced a year ago, so it was my Dad's turn to host my sister and I. The carnival was in town and he thought it would be a lot of fun to take us. We ate lots of candy and ice cream. My Dad suggested that we check out the haunted house. I was terrified. I knew that the monsters weren't real but I was painfully shy and easily frightened.

What we didn't know was that the monsters inside the haunted house were real and not actors. They didn't mean any harm though. They just wanted to put a good fright into anyone brave enough to enter their spooky house. "Where is Bela?" Papa Vampire asked. "He must have run off again. I'll go take a look" Mama Vampire replied.

"There you are. You'll have plenty of time to hang around later. We have some people to scare." "But I don't like scaring people. I want them to like me. I want to make friends with the other children." "Well you can't do that. You're a monster. Now get down from there and let's frighten some unlucky souls." "Yes Mother."

I reluctantly joined my Dad and sister in the Haunted House. It completely dark and eerily quiet inside. The only sounds we heard were the creaking of the wooden floor. Suddenly a pair of ghosts appeared out of nowhere. "BOO!" I was terrified as I felt my heart begin to race. My Dad and sister thought it was so funny as they shared a laugh.

"Okay everyone, it's time to go scare some people. Looks like we have a real scaredy-cat in the house tonight." As the monsters got ready to put a fright into the guests, Bela started to walk away. "I don't wanna scare people or make them cry." "Bela!" Mama Vampire shouted. "Let him go" Papa Vampire said,"We can't force him to be scary."

"Oh no, it's a werewolf! Don't eat us Mr. Werewolf!" My Dad chuckled. "Hey, where's Adam?" my sister wondered aloud. "I thought he was right behind us? I probably shouldn't have teased him like that. He's a sensitive kid and this must have be a terrifying for him." "Grrrrr!" "Not right now Mr. Werewolf. We have to go find my brother." "Grrrr?"

With tears in my eyes and fear in my heart, I started running down the hallway as fast as I could. I was desperate to find a way out. A frisky bat began buzzing around my head. "Shoo! Leave me alone bat!" I noticed a sliver of light at the end of the hallway. But instead of finding a way out of here, I found Bela instead. "Who are you?" we both asked at the same time.
