To all the future educators shaping the minds of young children.

Hi, I'm Sam the Squirrel!

Did you know that some animals hibernate? Hibernation is a time when animals curl up in a safe spot to protect themselves from the harsh winter.

Fall has turned to winter! Let's see how other animals are preparing to hibernate.

This is my den that I will hibernate in during winter! It will keep me nice and warm!
See, even this little mouse is hibernating! He has some nuts to eat when he gets hungry.
Eeeek! Did you know that bats hibernate as well? They hang upside down!

Once spring comes, animals begin to wake up and stop hibernating! I hope you learned about a few animals that hibernate!
Problem 1: Sam the Squirrel is going to forage for acorns. He already has 35 acorns. However, he wants enough acorns to last him through the winter. If he needs a total of 90 acorns, how many more acorns does he need to find?
Florida Mathematical Standards
MAFS.2.NBT.2.5
Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
MAFS.2.OA.1.1
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

A reflective paragraph about the mathematical reasoning involved in the task
This task asks students to find the missing value in the word problem. Students use their mathematical reasoning to create an equation such as 90 – ? = 35. Another mathematical reasoning skill students are using is thinking critically about the role of subtraction in the problem. Students can work in partners to verbalize their mathematical thinking.
Answer: 55 acorns
