Long ago, there was an ancient legend about a magical object hidden
deep in the forest. This object was like
no other. The legend was that the
person who had the object could travel anywhere in
the world.

They could go back in time and fly kites with a king.
They could travel into the future
and solve a rubik's cube with a robot!
They could even go to outer space
and eat apples, asparagus, acorns and
anchovies with an alien!

One day, a boy named Tommy and his sister Lucy were outside
playing baseball. "I'm tired of playing
baseball," said Tommy. "I want to have
an adventure in a far off land! I know
what we should do! We should go into
the forest!" "No, Tommy! The forest is
so scary! Why would we go in there?"
asked Lucy. She thought her brother
was acting as crazy as a bedbug!

"Well, don't you remember all those stories mom told us about the magical
object hidden in the forest? She said
it could take you anywhere you wanted
to go! All we have to do is find the
object, and then we can have an
adventure!" Lucy didn't believe that this
magical object really existed, but she didn't
want her brother to go into the woods all by
himself. "Well," she sighed, "it beats sitting
around here all day."

So Tommy and Lucy set out on their quest to find the
magical object. They went
deep into the forest and looked
all around. They looked under rocks
and high above in the trees. They
even swam in the pond to look
for anything that looked magical.
But they didn't find anything!

They were just about to give up hope when Lucy suddenly yelled, "Tommy, I think I found it!"
Tommy ran toward Lucy, who was looking
in a hole in the trunk of a tree. What he saw was
unbelievable. Coming out of the tree were
hundreds of tiny sparkles! "The magical object
must be inside the trunk of this tree!" Lucy said
eagerly. " I tried to get it out, but my arm isn't long
enough." Tommy replied, "I'll get it Lucy!" He
reached his arm as far as he could into the tree,
and pulled out the object!

I hate books!14
"What is it?" cried Lucy. Tommy just stared at the object in his hand.
He couldn't believe it. " It's... a book."
Tommy said, confused. "Why is the
magical object a book?!" Tommy had
seen hundreds of books and he hated to
read! He couldn't believe his bad luck!

16
"Books are so boring," Tommy saidangrily. "How could they ever take
you on an adventure? Let's keep
looking Lucy. This can't be the
magical object." "Oh Tommy, it must
be the magical object! It's sparkling!
Please open it," Lucy squealed.
"Ugh, fine, I'll open it. But don't say I
didn't warn you!" Little did he know,
Tommy was about to find out just how
wrong he was about books.
