"There is a child in every one of us who is still a trick-or-treater looking for a brightly-lit front porch.”
- Robert Brault

Halloween was finally here! It's my favourite holiday of the year. I love everything about it, the costumes, the candy, and trick or treating with my buddies from school. This year I would be dressing up as a vampire.

The door bell rang a few minutes after dinner. "Come in everybody. Hey Mom! My friends are here so we're going to go trick or treating now!" "Aren't you forgetting something?" "I love you?" "No. You have to wait for your big sister." "Aww! But she's going to spend the whole time on her phone talking to boys." "Either she goes with you or you don't go at all." "Okay."

The moment the sun went down, my friends and I were ready to start trick or treating. I wasn't too excited about having my big sister with us, but it was still going to be an awesome night. The night before we mapped out our route. We knew which houses gave out the best candy.

I have been going out for Halloween with my friends since kindergarten. It's always been the four of us: Francis, Paige, Riley, and myself. We would start working on our costumes months in advance. We were all in Grade 5 now and knew that we only had a couple more years of playing dress up left.

As we began our night, something seemed to be different this year. I couldn't put my finger on it, but there was an strange feeling in the air. Off in the distance I heard what sounded like an explosion. "Did you hear something Jo?" I asked my sister. "So anyways, I'm stuck with my brother tonight. I know. So lame" She was in Grade 9 and was too cool for Halloween. "Never mind."

"Did you guys hear that?" "Yeah" Francis replied. "What do you think it was?" "I don't know but maybe The Monster Detectives should investigate." The Monster Detectives was the name we called our group of supernatural investigators. We would go on adventures in search of UFOs, monsters, ghosts, and other spooky things.

While my sister continued to text everybody she knew on her phone, my friends and I went to investigate. "This is strange. There's smoke and fire as if something exploded. Yet there's nothing here. What do you think guys? Guys?" When I turned around my friends were gone.

Oh no! Grade 8s! "Okay nerds. Give us all of your candy!" "Especially the taffy apples. I love 'em so much!" "Settle down Jonesy!" the leader of the bullies yelled. "Sorry Boss." These guys were always picking on kids at school, taking their milk money and stuffing them in lockers. It was about time somebody stood up to them.
