Newton's first law of motion states that an object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion unless an outside force acts upon it. In the first image on the left, we see someone riding a rollercoaster. This person is currently in motion and unless the roller coaster stops the person will stay in motion. In the second picture, there are three parked cars shown. According to Newton's first law of motion, these cars would stay here forever if no one came and moved them. In real life, Newton's first law can be applied in many situations. For example: someone was leaving school and dropped one of their textbooks in the parking lot on the way out and forgot about it. Theoretically, the textbook could stay there forever if no one were to pick it up.
