This book is dedicated to the red pandas around the world!

Remi the the red panda is part of the kingdom animalia, next the phylum chordata, then the class mammalia and the order carnivora. He is part of the family ailuridae, the genus ailurus and the species fulgens. Remi the red panda is a unique species!

Remi lives in high-altitude mountain forests, he lives in the himalayas. Right now, there are only about ten thousand red pandas in the whole world, including Remi.

A neat thing about Remi is that he is nocturnal, meaning he sleeps during the day and is awake at night, this is beneficial to him because he can avoid many of his predators, this is a behavioral adaptation. He uses his large tails as a pillow and to keep himself warm when he sleeps, this a structural adaptation.

Remi is very good at climbing, he has strong curved claws he uses to climb trees. He has a fake thumb, which is really just a very big wrist bone. This is useful for feeding because it allows him to hold bamboo, this is a structural adaptation.

Remi is very small, and only weighs about 8-12 pounds, this allows him to climb thinner, smaller branches and escape from predators, this is a structural adaptation.

Remi as a red panda is a solitary animal. He likes to be alone until the mating season. This is beneficial because he can spend his time looking for food and sleeping! He doesn't have to worry about any other pandas. This is a behavioral adaptation.

Scientists have done a lot of research about Remi and his friends, and they found fossils that linked them to racoons, but red pandas are so unique that they don’t quite belong to any group of animals!

Keeping Remi and his friends is very important for the world to have diversity, and right now the biggest threat to red pandas is deforestation. Red pandas contribute to clean air for millions of people and they have a unique biology, behavior and are specialists in their environment.
