Intended Learning Outcomes
The intended learning outcomes for this assignment are as
follows:
1. Students will practice collaboration skills while creating a
book with their fellow classmates.
2. Students will practice their writing skills and create a
story integrating a math concept.
3. Students will review and master a math concept from a
lower grade level.
4. Students will practice presenting a potentially boring or
difficult concept to an audience in a creative and interesting
way.
5. Students will gain practice presenting when they read
their completed book to their assigned class.

It is often more effective to learn when the information is in contexts. The
goal of authentic learning is to make learning more meaningful by placing
information in context so the information has real world relevance. “Story
Jumper Math Book” is an example of authentic learning because students
are being asked to learn/practice their writing skills by actually writing for
someone and are reviewing a math concept by finding a way to integrate it
into their story. The math concept is taken out of a textbook and put into
an actually story that will illustrate the concept in a real world context.
Students will help teach younger students a math concept by creating a
story that gives the concept real world relevance. For example, students
who are assigned the math concept of addition in a first grade classroom
may write a story about a character having to add something together in
order to resolve the story line. The students writing the book are being
forced to consider the comprehension abilities of their assigned class and
must make a book appropriate for that audience. Students are not just
writing a random story for an assignment, they are writing a story they
have to actually present and share with others. This is similar to what
professional do because professionals often have to put together
presentations for their coworkers or for an audience and they must take
into account the preferences and needs of the audience

Authenticity of Project

Student Requirements
This project requires students to design a
book and communicate the story to
younger students. Students will write a
