Mr. Miller had us workin' the fields today. It was scorchin' hot outside and it really got to Ally, my best friend. She collapsed and got a whoopin'. I've got to go tend to her wounds now.

My cousin, Harriet, says she is coming to take me and brother to freedom.

I can't sleep tonight. I am so worried about Harriet. It has been nearly 2 weeks since I last heard from her...

Dear Diary,

She made it!

Harriet came for me and my brother to help us escape from the plantation. We started in the night so that Mr. Miller wouldn't catch us. It was a long first trip, we walked into the dawn until we came to a countryside house. They were nice people and let us get some sleep in their cellar.

The house that we came upon was home to a Mr. Alexander Brookes.

When Harriet brought Meriam to his house, that was it, he had fallen in love with her the moment he saw her walking up. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.

Welcome to my home! You all need some rest. You may sleep in my cellar, we don't want to be caught so be as quiet as a mouse!

Dear Diary,

If we get caught by anyone not willing to help us, The Fugitive Slave Law made it so that we would have to be taken back to the the plantation. The U.S. government believes in "owning" things, and apparently that includes people. Mr. Miller is an awful man, but the risk of getting caught is worth the freedom.

The tension rose as she moved in closer to him.

I thought I felt a connection with Alexander from the moment we met. I am saddened to have to leave. However, he is right. It would never work between us. Intimate relationships between people of different races is frowned upon and there is a law against it. I care for Mr. Brookes and would not want him to get in trouble for loving me. I must move on, to the North, where I will finally be free from slavery.
