A community is made up of
people and places. Our school is
an important place in our
community.
We go to Kipling School.

We play on the playground. We
learn to share and we help
each other.
That’s what people in
communities do.

Many special places in our
community are close to Kipling
School. The Historic Village is
right next to our school.
Did you know that people have
been living in our community
for over 160 years?

Casper Ott and his family were
some of the first settlers in our
community. When the Otts built
this cabin in 1837, there were
only a few people living in this
area.
The Casper Ott Cabin is the
oldest building in Lake County.

This is the Carriage House.
Before there were cars and
garages, people in our
community put their carriages
in buildings just like this one.
On Sundays, in the summer,
you can see the carriages
inside.

This is the Little Red
Schoolhouse. 100 years ago,
children in our community
went to a school just like this
one.
The Little Red School is one of
five buildings in the Historic
Village next to Kipling school.

Ott, Wilmot, and Clark. Do you
recognize any of these names?
The early leaders of our
community are laid to rest in
the Deerfield Cemetery.

John Kinzie Clark lived in our
community even before it had
the name “Deerfield.” He lived
with the Indians and rode a
horse to deliver mail for the
Pony Express.

Today, our community looks
very different than in those
early days. If you take a walk
in our community you will see
many special places.
This is where two big streets
meet.

Communities have places for
children to play. Jewett Park is
a big park near our school.
At Jewett Park, children play
sports and play on the
playground.

Our community has a train
station. Some grown-ups ride
on the train to go to work.
The train station in our
community was built in 1903.

On the corner of Jewett Park,
right by the train station, there
is a Veterans Memorial. This is
a special place to honor people
in our community who have
served in the military.

There are many shopping
stores in our community. This
shopping center is called
Deerfield Square.
In the summer there are free
concerts here.

Communities have special
places where you can buy food.
There are many restaurants
and special food shops in our
community.
Dear Franks and Deerfields
Bakery are close to our school.

All around our community,
there are metal sculptures of
children playing. Have you
seen the sculptures that are in
these pictures?
Have you seen other sculptures
in our community?

The Library is a special building
in our community. The
Deerfield Public Library is close
to our school.
Have you ever been to the
Library?
