Grandma Maynard's Book

This is the story of Benjamin Bear
Who lived in Bear country in a mountain lair,
With his father George Grissley and Silver Lady his mother
And Jonathon Bear who was Benjamin’s Brother,
A happier family there just couldn’t be
Except for poor Benjamin, he was bashful you see,
When the other bear children asked him to play
Bashful Benjamin Bear would just run away

If the bears had a picnic as sure as can be
You would always find Benjamin behind a big tree.
At school when the teacher asked him to recite,
Bashful Benjamin Bear would drop right out of sight.
And when company came to visit their lair
They’d never see much of Benjamin Bear
So bashful he’d hide behind father or mother
Or even behind Jonathon, his little brother

But from where he was hiding he would watch with big eyes
And if you were close you could hear his sad cries
So very unhappy this small bashful one
And he wanted so much to join in the fun
He wanted to romp and race in the park
And play hide a go seek just before it got dark
When the others went fishing he wanted to try
He wanted to be just a regular guy
Not frightened and bashful, but you can be sure,
Each time that he tried, it was just as before
So he’d just hide and watch, but wish he were there,
Poor lonely and sad, Bashful Benjamin Bear
Now one of the things that all bears like to do
Is eat nice fresh honey, I’ll bet you do too.

But they never buy theirs at a store, no siree.
They find theirs in the forest in an old hollow tree.
They walk through the forest just sniffing with care
And when they smell honey strong in the air
They know they are close to the treasure they’re seeking
And not far away, there’s Bashful Benjamin peeking.
He could see how excited they were with their sweet
And oh how he wanted a share in their treat.
He knew that each one would be willing to share.
But you can’t share with someone you don’t know is there.
Too bashful to join, poor Benjamin wanted to cry
But he always went with them thinking each time he’d try
