As part of our Skype conversations about different countries, today we will read all about India!
So far, we have read about:
1) Dubai
2) Australia
3) India
4) ??

If we fly directly, we can get to India's capital city, New Delhi, in about 8 hours from Amsterdam.
India is in Asia, next to the Indian Ocean, and it has the world's greatest population after China!
Let's explore a land of 1.3 billion people!
The Netherlands has a population of around 17 million...
So, where are we actually going?
You can see India here on the world map. Although it has the second biggest population, it is the seventh biggest country in size.
Which countries do you think are even larger than India?
Can you guess any?

The list of the largest countries is in the world goes:
1) Russia 2) Canada 3) United States of America 4) China 5) Brazil 6) Australia 7) INDIA!
Do you recognise any of these flags or maps?
Which flag belongs to which country?

Now, back to India!
The flag of India is orange, white and green with a blue Chakra in the middle that looks like a wheel - it is to show that life is always moving.
Have you seen this flag before?

The capital city of India is New Delhi.
The weather here is dry with the summers being intensely hot!
In India, they have a monsoon season, when it is very humid outside and it rains a lot!

So in the Netherlands, we travel around by bus, bike and tram.
In India, most people use public transport to travel to school or work. The cities, like New Delhi, are extremely busy and with so many people, it can be difficult to get around the city!
The roads in Delhi are a mixture of new and old roads, and are all different in size and width.

Black and yellow taxis, rickshaws, bicycles, motorcycles, huge trucks and even animals all fight for their space on the roads in India!
Drivers have to be extremely careful not to run into any animals or wildlife on the roads! The cow is a sacred animal in India, so you have to be very careful not to harm them.

But how do we communicate in India?
As the country is so large and is home to over a billion people, they don't all speak one language!
23 languages are spoken in India, including the main languages which are Hindi and Punjabi.
A lot of Indian people learn English at school, so if you are a tourist, usually someone will be able to help you with directions or if you need any help!

Do you recognise this building? What do you think it is?
Why are so many people visiting it, from all over the world?

The Taj Mahal is named as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Millions of people from all over the world visit the Taj Mahal every year.
It is located in a city called Agra in the North of India.
It was built to bury the tomb of the Emperor's wife called Mumtaz Mahal in the year 1653.

It took 20 years to build and it is made out of white marble, and stands at 171 meters tall.
The Taj Mahal has a large garden surrounding it, a long reflective pool at the front and a Mosque, where Muslims go to worship.
Taj Mahal name means 'crown of palaces'.
