
is for absolute value
Absolute value makes a negative number positive. Positive numbers and 0 are left unchanged. The absolute value of x is written |x|. We write |–6| = 6 and |8| = 8.


is for base

In plane geometry or solid geometry, the bottom of a figure. If the top is parallel to the bottom (as in a trapezoid or prism), both the top and bottom are called bases.

is for cone

A three dimensional figure with a single base tapering to an apex. The base can be any simple closed curve. Often the word cone refers to a right circular cone.

is for decagon

a polygon with ten sides

is for equation
1+1=2

A mathematical sentence built from expressions using one or more equal signs (=).
is for fraction

A ratio of numbers or variables. Fractions may not have denominator 0


is for great circles

a circle on the surface of a sphere that lies in a plane passing through the sphere's center. As it represents the shortest distance between any two points on a sphere, a great circle of the earth is the preferred route taken by a ship or aircraft.

is for hexagon

A polygon with six sides

is for integers

All positive and negative whole numbers (including zero). That is, the set {... , –3, –2, –1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...}. Integers are indicated by either or J.

is for Joint Variation

When we say z is jointly proportional to a set of variables, it means that z is directly proportional to each variable taken one at a time.

is for kite

A quadrilateral with two pairs of adjacent sides that are congruent. Note that the diagonals of a kite are perpendicular.

is for line

The geometric figure formed by two points. A line is the straight path connecting two points and extending beyond the points in both directions.

is for mean

Another word for average. Mean almost always refers to arithmetic mean. In certain contexts, however, it could refer to the geometric mean, harmonic mean, or root mean square.

is for no slope

The "slope" of a vertical line. A vertical line has undefined slope because all points on the line have the same x-coordinate. As a result the formula used for slope has a denominator of 0, which makes the slope undefined.

is for oval

An egg-shaped curve. Note: An oval is not the same as an ellipse.

is for plane

A flat surface extending in all directions. Any three noncollinear points lie on one and only one plane. So do any two distinct intersecting lines. A plane is a two-dimensional figure.
