History of Basketball
By: Emma Burdge
Dr James Naismith invented basketball in 1891. He was born on November 6, 1861 in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. He was a Canadian and American sports coach and innovator.
Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith. He was a PE instructor and invented the game while working at the YMCA.
While he taught PE at the YMCA, he was told he had to create an indoor game where athletes could stay in shape during the cold winters. Basketball was then created, and it was became so popular that the YMCA began promoting it internationally.
1891-
There were 13 rules that the players had to follow.
The ball can be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
The ball can be batted with one or both hands in any direction.
You can't run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot where it was caught.
1891-
The ball can be held in your hands.
No shouldering, pushing, holding, tripping, or striking is allowed. If the player breaks this rule, it is a foul. The second foul results in disqualification until the next goal is made.
If a player strikes the ball with their fist, it violates rules 3, 4, and 5.
If either team gets 3 fouls, it counts as a goal for their opponents.
1891-
A goal counts when the ball is thrown or batted from the ground into the basket and stays there. If the ball rests on the edge and the player moves the basket it counts as a goal.
When the ball goes out of bounds, it needs to be thrown back in and played by the first person who touches it. The person throwing the ball in has 5 seconds, if they go over 5 seconds the ball goes to the other team.
1891-
The umpire judges if someone gets fouled. And tells the referee if three consecutive fouls have been made.
The referee judges the ball and decides when it goes out of bounds and keeps score and keeps time of the game.
The game has 2 fifteen minute halves with 5 minute rests in between.
Whatever team has the most goals at the end is the winner.
