This guide is going to get you in the water and surfing like a pro in just a few quick steps.
You may not think it, however the board plays a huge role in your surfing and you need to select the right board for yourself. I am going to help you with this.
- First you need to get a board that is going to float your weight in the water. However for a beginner you want to select any board that is thick with a lot of mass.
- A good size range would be anywhere from 6'6 all the way to 7'7. There is a large variety of options, so it is hard to make the wrong decision.
Step 1-Deciding which board is right for you
Step 2- Where to Surf
Once you have picked the right board, it is now time to find a place to surf. This can be tricky sometimes because if you pick the wrong spot it can be very dangerous.
- Before you jump in the water obliviously, ask local surfers where a good spot for beginners is.
- Make sure that the waves are not breaking powerfully at the beach you are going to surf.
- You want the waves to be smaller with not to much power behind them.
- Another thing to consider is the bottom you are surfing. There could be a reef, rocks, or sand on the bottom, a good beginner bottom is sand so you do not risk injury if you fall.
- There are three types of breaks at a beach, a reef break, a point break, and a beach break. Typically, it is recommended to surfa beach break.
Step 3- How to surf
When you finally pick a spot to surf, it is now time to paddle out!
- Walk down to the water and put your leash on, so that if you fall, you do not lose your board.
- Jump on your board and start paddling out the back to where the waves do not break.
- Duck-dive each wave that breaks on you so that you do not get pulled back to the shore.
- When you finally reach the unbroken waves it is now time to catch a wave.
- Locate a wave and start paddling as fast as you can towards shore. when you feel a push start to stand up.
- Put one knee up on the board and push yourself up.
- Once you are standing enjoy the ride and then paddle back out to the back again and repeat.
Step 4-The Step unwritten rules of surfing
Congratulations on catching your first wave, you are now on your way to becoming a pro surfer! Now it is time to learn the proper etiquette for surfing.
- Never drop in on a wave that someone is already surfing, it is rude, dangerous, and gets people furious.
- Once you have caught a wave, wait until it is your turn to catch a wave again, it goes in order.
- Be respectful and nice to the other surfers, and you will make friends.
- If you follow these rules and make the right decisions when you are surfing, you will not get injured or injure anyone else.
- Remember, When in doubt do not paddle out!
- Always make the right decisions like I explained and it will serve you well.
