Juan is Endangered!?
Juan is part of an endangered species called the Javan Rhinoceros. The word "endangered" means to be in danger of becoming extinct. This could also mean that he is in danger of being wiped out completely. Juan is very nervous because he does not want to lose his family or friends. What would we do without Juan?

Juan lives in the Ujong Kulon National Park. He lives in a very thick jungle with lots of plants. There is also a lot of rain. He likes living here because there is a lot of food, and there is a lot of cover to protect him from predators. Juan likes to feel protected due to him being endangered.

What Does Juan Look Like?
Juan can be 4 to 5 feet tall. He can also weigh about 2000 - 5000 pounds. Juan is grey, but when he is wet, he turns black. Juan has one horn on his nose. His skin gives the appearance of scales. Juan has very strong teeth that play a big role in his life. He also has a long, and pointed upper lip.

What is Juan's Favorite Food?
Juan is something called an omnivore, which means that he likes to eat plants. He is also known to be called a browser, which means that he searches for food wherever he can find it. He loves to eat stems, twigs, plant leaves, and fruit. Juan is hunted by hyenas, and there will be less of them without Juan and his friends.

What is it Like in Juan's Environment?
Juan lives in a rain forest where it is very hot, humid, and rainy. The temperature in his house is 86 degrees! Wow! There is also a lot of rain in Juan's environment. There is a ginormous 12 inches of rain at Juan's house each year. Juan also has neighbors, which include leopards, frogs, toads, and more. Also, there are many plants that live there too. These may include fern trees and cecropia trees, which look like Lillie pads.

What does Juan do with his Friends?
Juan and his friend Akioa,who is a white cattle egret, are very nice to each other. They have something called mutualism, which is a type of symbiotic relationship where they both get something good from each other. In this friendship, his friend, Akioa gets to eat ticks and insects. On the other hand, Juan does not get any sicknesses from those bugs, which could hurt him. Juan is very thankful for his friend.

About Juan!
Did you know that Juan and his family is the most endangered large mammal in the world. Can you believe that?! Also, Juan can travel 9-12 miles in a day! We can travel up to 30 miles in a day, but that's because we don't stop every 30 minutes to eat. Finally, they have very bad eyesight, but have extremely good smelling and hearing. Juan is definitely cooler than all of the other rhinos.
